What is poetry?<\/p>\n

It’s “language at its most distilled and most powerful,” according to poet Rita Dove.<\/p>\n

<\/broadstreet-zone><\/strong><\/div>\n

For novelist Alice Walker, “Poetry is the lifeblood of rebellion, revolution, and the raising of consciousness.”<\/p>\n

And legendary Canadian author Margaret Atwood says, “I don\u2019t think I solve problems in my poetry; I think I uncover the problems.”<\/p>\n

In their study of contemporary novel Long Way Down<\/em> by Jason Reynolds, which is written in verse, Grade 9 Huntsville High School (HHS) students were asked by their teacher, Jennifer Rosewarne, to match the style and tone of one of his poems using content of their own.<\/p>\n

In Reynolds’ own words, “Poetry has the ability to create entire moments with just a few choice words.”<\/p>\n

The three HHS students\u2014Bronwyn McColl, Jooniper Hill, and Ty Budreau\u2014whose poems we’ve shared below make wise use of their own few choice words.<\/p>\n

BEAR\u2019S REAL NAME<\/p>\n

Was Daron.<\/p>\n

Not very often was he Bear.<\/p>\n

I gave him that name when I was little. I couldn\u2019t tell ya why.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s my big brother.<\/p>\n

11 years older than me.<\/p>\n

Everyone says he\u2019s an old soul, but I\u2019ve always just seen him as old.<\/p>\n

BEAR WAS TWO-SIDED<\/p>\n

Two different people all in one.<\/p>\n

My older protective brother
\nwho\u2019d make sure everyone I was around only made me smile.<\/p>\n

and<\/p>\n

The older brother all my friends knew for giving us rides into town at strange
\nhours in the<\/p>\n

night.<\/p>\n

He was the best friend who helped me out of trouble, but he was also the reason I was in trouble.<\/p>\n

He would lecture us for hours about how smoking kills you, in between sips of his beer.<\/p>\n

PEOPLE ALWAYS SAID<\/p>\n

He\u2019d never be anything.<\/p>\n

He didn\u2019t like school.<\/p>\n

But now he\u2019s got a master degree<\/p>\n

for music composition.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s taught in Toronto and<\/p>\n

Ottawa.<\/p>\n

And I\u2019m proud to say Bear did become something<\/p>\n

I always knew he would.<\/p>\n

Even though he didn\u2019t have the best hand of cards<\/p>\n

he did a damn good job playing them.<\/p>\n

DYLAN\u2019S GIVEN NAME
\nWas forgotten.<\/p>\n

I heard it once, maybe twice.<\/p>\n

Not that it
\nMatters.<\/p>\n

Dylan is what
\nThey go by.<\/p>\n

A name they
\nGave themself.<\/p>\n

A word for
\nWho they are.<\/p>\n

A sound for
\nHow they feel.<\/p>\n

And there is nothing wrong<\/p>\n

with that.<\/p>\n

DYLAN IS TWO SIDED<\/p>\n

Two faces where there
\nShould be one.<\/p>\n

One they show in public:<\/p>\n

A passionate believer,
\nA fighter for rights,
\nA imaginative human,
\nNot scared of who they are,
\nNot afraid to help.<\/p>\n

The second I glimpse through the first:<\/p>\n

Unhappy with the world,
\nScared by the unknown,
\nScarred by words,
\nMore than sticks and stones<\/p>\n

PEOPLE ALWAYS SAID<\/p>\n

Words shouldn’t hurt
\nAnd that it\u2019s violence we should fear.<\/p>\n

But I know that Dylan
\nIs hurt by words.<\/p>\n

Words like to dig under their skin
\ntainting blood and mind alike.<\/p>\n

Sometimes I wish there
\nWere words I could speak.
\nWords to heal hidden scars
\nInside and out,
\nin an instant.<\/p>\n

a nickname given to
\nher myself<\/p>\n

all because of a silly
\nInside joke.<\/p>\n

Simple,
\nyet so complicated<\/p>\n

that I couldn’t explain.<\/p>\n

CLEO WAS TWO SIDED.<\/p>\n

Two personalities,
\none happy and loving and
\nthe other, sad and empty.<\/p>\n

Happy and loving:
\nNightly facetime calls,
\nTalking about our days,
\nVenting about life’s problems,
\nAnd planning future vacations with our friends.<\/p>\n

But also:
\nQuiet, depressed,
\nNot answering her phone
\nfor days,
\nand suffering in silence<\/p>\n

I HAVE ALWAYS SAID<\/p>\n

That she was the happiest girl
\nI\u2019ve ever met,
\nbut that she was brought up
\nIn the wrong house<\/p>\n

Because of the monsters
\nclawing at her door.<\/p>\n

They can make it harder for
\nher to see herself,
\nthe way that I do.<\/p>\n
