Gambling Three No-Trump Responses<\/strong><\/p>\n

Last week we introduced the convention \u201cGambling Three No-Trump (3NT)\u201d that originated across the pond in Britain\u2019s Acol Bridge system.<\/p>\n

<\/broadstreet-zone><\/strong><\/div>\n

This week\u2019s Gambling 3NT is about your responses to partner\u2019s opening 3NT. First, let\u2019s review last week. You and partner have agreed to play the Gambling 3NT. Partner opens 3NT. You know that partner has a hand with seven solid Clubs AKQJ0xx or seven solid Diamonds and nothing else \u2013 seven sure tricks if he can get in. If opener has anything extra, then his hand is too strong and he should open just One Club or One Diamond, not 3NT. Likewise, if he has seven solid Hearts or Spades, it is better to try for a game in the major\u2026just open One Heart or One Spade.<\/p>\n

With the 3NT opening, your hand, the dummy hand, needs to take only two tricks plus stop the opponents from getting more than four tricks. When your dummy hand does so, partner has his 3NT contract! So, how do you confirm this to him?<\/p>\n

You have only two possible bids, PASS or Four Clubs. Let me explain.<\/p>\n

What must you have in your dummy hand to PASS? First you must have at least one Diamond card AND one Club card to get to his long minor suit when dummy gets in.<\/p>\n

Second, in order to PASS, you must have a stopping honour in EACH one of three suits (opening partner has all the honours in the fourth suit). A stopping honour would be an Ace or a protected King or three cards to the Queen.<\/p>\n

If you fulfill these two requirements, the odds favour success in the Gambling 3NT more often than failure \u2013 and it will fail. However, the folks at the Acol Bridge Club say that if it does fail, your partnership may still get a good score because partner\u2019s 3NT opening prevented the opposition from a possible contract.<\/p>\n

Now what if you do not have the required stoppers and the entry to opener\u2019s long suit? Should this be the case then you MUST bid Four Clubs over partner\u2019s 3NT. Partner will correct if his suit is Diamonds, and that is where the contract will be played for a part score.<\/p>\n
