Gambling Three No-Trump<\/strong><\/p>\n

This week\u2019s convention is called the \u201cGambling Three No-Trump (3NT)\u201d. No, it has nothing to do with our casinos. In fact the convention comes from across the pond. In London, England, there is a Bridge club called Acol Bridge Club. First a little background.<\/p>\n

<\/broadstreet-zone><\/strong><\/div>\n

Originally called the Acol Road Bridge Club it had its modest beginnings on Acol Road in the 1930s. The creative and dedicated players in the Club turned Acol into a world-wide phenomenon and the basis of the current British Bridge system. Today on a different street and bigger location, the Acol Bridge Club retains its name and character. The Acol system competes with the American Standard system which is more familiar to North American Bridge players. Both systems are played on the world stage.<\/p>\n

Two of the most notable differences between these systems are first that American Standard opens five-card majors whereas Acol opens four-card majors. Second, American Standard opens 1NT with 15-17 points whereas Acol opens the weak 1NT with 11-14 points.<\/p>\n

This week\u2019s Gambling 3NT is one of Acol\u2019s early inventions. We have talked before that some conventions are for defense and some are for offense. This week\u2019s convention is a fun convention for both offense and defense. You and partner have agreed to play the Gambling 3NT. Partner opens 3NT. Partner has a hand with seven solid Clubs or seven solid Diamonds and nothing else \u2013 AKQJ0xx\u2013 seven sure tricks if he can get in. If opener has anything extra, then his hand is too strong and should open just One Club or One Diamond, not 3NT. Likewise, if he has seven solid Hearts or Spades, it is better to try for a game in the major\u2026just open One Heart or One Spade.<\/p>\n

Your hand will be the dummy hand. It needs to take only two tricks plus stop the opponents from getting more than four tricks. When your dummy hand does its job, partner has his 3NT contract! So, how do you confirm to opener the correct dummy hand?<\/p>\n
