Cappelletti Defense Against One No-Trump<\/strong><\/p>\n

We have talked before that some conventions are for defense and some are for offense. This week\u2019s convention is all about defense.<\/p>\n

<\/broadstreet-zone><\/strong><\/div>\n

The opponents open One No-Trump. It is your turn to bid. You might have an opening One No-Trump yourself or you might have a long suit of seven-card length and zero points. What are your options?<\/p>\n

We will discuss two better-known conventions for defense against One No-Trump openings. The first is Cappelletti. The second is DONT (Disturb Opponent\u2019s No-Trump). Next week we will talk about DONT.<\/p>\n

This week\u2019s convention is Cappelletti.
\nCappelletti is a defense against One No-Trump openings invented by Michael Cappelletti Senior (1942- 2013). Using Cappelletti, the basis of your defense is three-fold depending on the following three holdings. Otherwise you PASS.<\/p>\n

First you also have a One No-Trump opening, and double for penalty.<\/p>\n

Second you have a long suit (any one of the four) with few or no entries to get to your suit. You realize that if you have a long suit, they probably also have a long suit. With their One No-Trump opening they probably have the entries to get to the long suit. Not vulnerable you are willing to take a penalty. You bid Two Clubs to show a single suiter. Partner may PASS with six Clubs. Otherwise, partner must answer Two Diamonds and you correct if your long suit is not Diamonds. With interference, partner is off the hook.<\/p>\n

Third, you have a two-suited hand (5-5 or 5-4) and you are not vulnerable. Bid Two Diamonds to show both majors. Bid Two Hearts to show Hearts and an undisclosed minor. Bid Two Spades to show Spades and an undisclosed minor. Bid Two No-Trump to show both minors. If partner does not have three cards to support your Two Heart or Two Spade bid then partner bids the lowest minor. If he bids Three Clubs, you PASS or correct to Diamonds. To your Two No-Trump bid showing both minors, partner responds with his best minor and there the part score will be played unless the opponents continue bidding.<\/p>\n
