It was a great weekend for hockey in Huntsville as two local squads suited up for a home tournament on the Don Lough and Jack Bionda ice pads. Both the Dalton Payne Bantam AE Otters and the Sutton Group Muskoka Realty Atom AE Otters had a strong showing, with the Bantams capturing second place in the Dalton Payne Contracting Bantam AE Tournament.<\/p>\n

Sutton Group Muskoka Realty Atom AE Otters:<\/h6>\n

The Atom AE team played well against a competitive field, coming up just short of reaching the semi finals with a 1-1-1 record through three games of play. The first game saw the local lads go down in a close one to Don Mills 2-1 on Friday night, before the boys were able to rally against the Pelham Panthers with a 3- 0 win Saturday morning. Needing a win to move on, the AE Atoms pulled out all the stops against Ennismore, but couldn’t find the extra goal they needed late in the game which ended in a 1-1 draw.<\/p>\n

The Atom AE team is coached by Geoff Carleton and Dave Thur. The team’s players are: #1 Will Tempest (goal), #20 Jackson MacDougall (goal), #2 Glen Thur, #4 Sam Lockwood, #5 Owen Carleton, #7 Owen Decaro, #8 Judah Maxwell, #9 Landen Cool, #11 Nicholas Sands, #12 Toby Johnson, #13 Reed Summers\u2013Arndt, #14 Wyatt Fisher, #15 Ethan Caracciola, #16 Jess Gardiner, #17 Peter Perentisis, #18 Austin Waters, #19 Eric Adams.<\/p>\n

Dalton Payne Bantam AE Otters:<\/h6>\n

The Bantam AE team dominated the round robin portion of the tournament, going a perfect 4-0 and scoring 17 goals while only giving up one to move on to the semi finals on Sunday.<\/p>\n

The impressive run began with Huntsville defeating Glanbrook by a score of 8-0 in their first game on Friday, followed with a 3-0 win over South Porcupine later on that evening. Saturday\u2019s games saw the Bantam squad defeat Tavistock 3-0 and Erin 3-1 to set up a rematch with South Porcupine in the semis, which the Otters won handily by a score of 4-0.<\/p>\n

The Otters refused to quit in the tournament final, but couldn’t find the offense they needed to break the game open against the Pelham Panthers<\/p><\/div>\n

The Otters came out of the gate shooting in the tournament final against the Pelham Panthers, but for the first time all weekend saw the opposition score the game’s first goal. Down 1-0 heading into the second, the Otters rallied together, and halfway through the period were rewarded with the game-tying goal to even the score 1-1. The Panthers were looking for revenge after the Otters beat them to win the Caledonia tournament earlier this season however, and continued to pressure the puck in waves, scoring twice on the powerplay before adding a late third period goal to win the game 4-1.<\/p>\n

The semi final game I thought we played lights out,” said coach Rob Durnan. “We brought everything we had, and unfortunately came up short in the final. I’m really happy with the way the team played.”<\/p>\n

The Bantams will play in the regional Silver Stick tournament in Haliburton next weekend. A win there would give the Otters a berth into the international Silver Stick to be held in Pelham later on this season. Outside of tournaments, the Otters have lost just twice in the regular season and lead the MPS with 21 points.<\/p>\n

“Everybody, we have really come together as a team in the last two weeks, and I am seeing a lot of positives,” said Durnan. “If we take care of business on this end in Eastern Ontario and in our division, I have a feeling we might see Pelham again in the all-Ontario finals.”<\/p>\n
