Overcall<\/strong><\/p>\n

There are some competitive conventions used by the second bidder that you may find useful. Last week we talked about the \u201cTakeout Double\u201d. This week will be the \u201cOvercall\u201d.<\/p>\n

<\/broadstreet-zone><\/strong><\/div>\n

The opponents have opened the bidding but you have values and a good suit in your hand. Your suit is at least a five-card major or six-card minor. Your suit has two of the top three honours or three of the top five honours. You can \u201cOvercall\u201d in your suit with only eight points at the one level and 11 points at the two level. Partner will know that your Overcall may have less than an opening and judge himself accordingly.<\/p>\n

You make an Overcall for three reasons. You want to compete for a part-score or game. You want to suggest a possible lead for partner. You want to obstruct the opponent\u2019s bidding.<\/p>\n

Now, how do you respond to your partner\u2019s Overcall? Knowing that partner may have only about 10 points, you must be careful unless you have a smashing hand. With 15 points or more you may invite by jumping in your suit or possibly go direct to game. If you jump in your suit, your Overcall partner then forces to game with 10 points or more. Overcall partner passes with less and settles for a part-score.<\/p>\n

An Overcall is made only below game level. An Overcall is made only when partner has not yet bid. An Overcall is made only immediately after the opponent\u2019s opening, or after two Passes.<\/p>\n
