Jacoby Transfers<\/strong><\/p>\n

One of our readers has requested a review of the \u201cJacoby Transfer\u201d convention (not to be confused with \u201cJacoby 2NT\u201d convention): \u201cWho should use it and when should it be used?\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/broadstreet-zone><\/strong><\/div>\n

What is in a name? The Jacoby Transfer convention, known just as \u201cTransfer\u201d, was promoted by the same Oswald Jacoby (d. 1984) of Texas who promoted Jacoby 2NT. It is amazing how one person can develop two such popular conventions.<\/p>\n

The primary intention of the Transfer is to make a contract in which the best hand stays hidden. A Transfer is used only following a No-Trump opening (1NT or 2NT). It should be used by every partnership because it is easy to learn and very effective for better scores.<\/p>\n

A Transfer is used by a responder to the 1NT or 2NT opening only if he has a five-card or better major suit or a six-card or better minor. It can be used with a hand of few points\u2014even zero\u2014because it is easier for opener to play a suit contract with a seven-card fit than in 1NT or 2NT, facing a weak dummy (opener usually will have at least two cards in the suit).<\/p>\n

Responder bids the suit below his long suit. For example, after 1NT or 2NT opening, if responder has five Hearts, he bids Two Diamonds (or Three Diamonds if it is a 2NT opening.) Opener completes the transfer by bidding Two Hearts or Three Hearts. Now if the contract ends up in Hearts, the best hand, belonging to the declarer, is hidden and the weaker hand becomes dummy.
\nIf Spades is the five-card suit, responder bids Two Hearts and opener bids Two Spades.
\nIf transferring to a six-card minor, responder bids Two Spades. Opener bids Three Clubs and responder corrects, if necessary, to the Diamond suit, Three Diamonds. Some partnerships have an agreement to bid Three Clubs as a Transfer to Three Diamonds. This has the advantage of keeping the good hand (opener\u2019s hand) hidden.<\/p>\n
