Jacoby Two-No-Trump <\/strong><\/p>\n

One of our readers has requested a review of the \u201cJacoby Two-No-Trump\u201d convention (Jacoby 2NT) \u2013 \u201cWho should use it and when should it be used?\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/broadstreet-zone><\/strong><\/div>\n

The Jacoby 2NT convention was promoted by Oswald Jacoby (D.1984) of Texas. Its primary intention is to make getting to a slam more accurate. It should be used only by regular partners because if one partner forgets a step, chaos and a poor score could follow!<\/p>\n

2NT is the first response by you, the responder, after a major suit opening by partner. For example, your partner opens One Heart. By agreement, it is amazing all the information that your 2NT response tells your partner. When you have agreed to use this convention, these three little words \u201cTwo No-Trump\u201d tell your partner that you have four card support of his suit and also that you have a full opening hand of any strength. It also tells your opening partner that the partnership has game-going values and possibly a slam. Finally, it also tells opening partner that his next bid is convention and the start of a slam investigation.<\/p>\n

Jacoby 2NT is used only in response to a major suit opening One Heart or One Spade. The bid has a special meaning so it must be alerted and the special meaning explained to the opponents.<\/p>\n

There is more than one possibility for opener\u2019s response to the 2NT bid to start the slam investigation. I prefer a cue bid sequence of first round controls (an Ace in the suit or a Void). Remember, a cue bid is the bid of a suit in which you do not plan to play. This cue bid has a special meaning in an agreement with your partner so the cue bids also must be alerted to the opponents. These cue bid responses to Jacoby 2NT will be covered next week.<\/p>\n
