Is Your Long Suit Worth a Full Opening <\/strong><\/p>\n

Most of us use the Weak-Two convention to open a strong suit of six-card length. Some players, however, misjudge the strength of their hand and should open at the one level rather than the Weak-Two level. Doing so might give their partner more information.<\/p>\n

<\/broadstreet-zone><\/strong><\/div>\n

The Weak-Two convention shows that in your six-card suit you have two of the top three honour cards (Ace King Queen) or three of the top five honour cards which includes also the Jack and Ten in your six-card suit.<\/p>\n

A Weak-Two bid has a six-card suit which could be as weak as seven points (King Queen and two length points). It could also be as strong as twelve points (Ace King and two length points plus an outside King).<\/p>\n

Ay – there\u2019s the rub. If you have a good suit and a hand of twelve points, you might be better to bid the suit at the one level and then re-bid the suit to show six cards when you have a chance. This gives more information to partner about the strength and shape of your hand. After all, partner may be looking for game, or even slam, and knowing that you have at least twelve points will help him decide.<\/p>\n

Your twelve-point hand might deserve further consideration, a second thought before you bid your Weak-Two.<\/p>\n
