Huntsville resident Janet McCormack thinks they are a wonderful idea, but she noticed something missing among the ones she&#8217;s come across: a little free library for kids.<\/p>\n<div style=\"float: left; margin-right: 14px;\"><strong><broadstreet-zone zone-id=\"45658\" keywords=\"\" soft-keywords=\"true\" zone-alias=\"\"><\/broadstreet-zone><\/strong><\/div>\n<p> So she enlisted her son, Terry, to build one, mounted it on a tree in front of her home, and filled it with books and games.<\/p>\n<p>Inside each item is a note letting kids know they can return it or keep it, and maybe donate something they no longer use.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The idea of calling it a library was to put something up that was familiar to people but I am not too concerned about the return part,&#8221; says McCormack. &#8220;I have loads more to fill it up.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She loved playing board games as a kid and &#8220;wanted to share that love with the kids in Huntsville,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p>McCormack has been collecting kids books and games to use in her business, Affinity Consulting. &#8220;<span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">I work with kids with autism and other learning needs, helping them learn about their brain, how it works, what supports they need and then how to advocate for themselves. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">When you know what&#8217;s happening in your brain, what your thinking is, then you know how to alter your thinking if you need to&#8230; Then kids have a better chance to have their best days because they can figure out what they need.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_75850\" style=\"width: 717px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-75850\" class=\"size-full wp-image-75850\" src=\"https:\/\/media-doppleronline-ca.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/2019\/10\/Kids-Little-Free-Library.jpg\" alt=\"There's lots to choose from in Janet McCormack's little free library (Photo: Janet McCormack)\" width=\"707\" height=\"546\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media-doppleronline-ca.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/2019\/10\/Kids-Little-Free-Library-300x232.jpg 300w, https:\/\/media-doppleronline-ca.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/2019\/10\/Kids-Little-Free-Library.jpg 707w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 707px) 100vw, 707px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-75850\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">There&#8217;s lots to choose from in Janet McCormack&#8217;s little free library (Photo: Janet McCormack)<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_75849\" style=\"width: 717px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-75849\" class=\"size-full wp-image-75849\" src=\"https:\/\/media-doppleronline-ca.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/2019\/10\/Kids-Little-Free-Library-note.jpg\" alt=\"Each item includes a note about its return (or not)\" width=\"707\" height=\"707\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media-doppleronline-ca.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/2019\/10\/Kids-Little-Free-Library-note-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/media-doppleronline-ca.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/2019\/10\/Kids-Little-Free-Library-note-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/media-doppleronline-ca.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/2019\/10\/Kids-Little-Free-Library-note.jpg 707w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 707px) 100vw, 707px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-75849\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Each item includes a note about its return (or not)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>McCormack has loads of books and about 400 board games that she uses for lessons. &#8220;You can learn so much [from games]\u2014winning and losing and turn-taking and predicting and planning ahead and reading and math,&#8221; she says.
