When To Stop Bidding With PASS<\/strong><\/p>\n

Last week we investigated the wrong time to PASS, when your partner\u2019s response is forcing. On the flip side, this week we will investigate when you should stop bidding and PASS instead. Your partner\u2019s bid is just inviting, not forcing, and perhaps you should PASS!<\/p>\n

<\/broadstreet-zone><\/strong><\/div>\n

Some conventions are just guidelines. Today\u2019s column is part of the convention \u201cLimit Your Hand\u201d. It is a guideline that you and your partner should follow to settle on the best contract.<\/p>\n

Consider a hand in which you are the dealer and open One Club with a minimum hand (12-14 points). Partner responds One Spade which is forcing. You must bid again unless the opponents interfere \u2013 then you are off the hook and may PASS to show your minimum hand. If you are forced to bid, you have three, and only three, bidding options to show your minimum hand. They are Two Clubs, Two Spades or One-No-Trump.<\/p>\n

By making one of these three bids, you have limited your hand to show a minimum hand. Now, if partner bids Two-No-Trump or Three Clubs or Three Spades he is inviting you to game. Partner knows already that you are a minimum hand so why is he inviting you to bid game? The only reason for his invitation bid is that he knows the partnership is at game level if you are at your maximum which would be fourteen points.<\/p>\n

Basically, partner is asking you to re-evaluate your hand considering shortness points and the quality of your points. If you are at a good fourteen points, then bid again. If you are at a poor fourteen points or less, then PASS and play for a part-score.<\/p>\n
