On September 24, the Muskoka Community Foundation announced the recipients of the 2019 Smart and Caring Muskoka Fund. This year\u2019s grant recipients are Muskoka Seniors, Muskoka Parry Sound Sexual Assault Services, Muskoka Women\u2019s Advocacy Group, and the South Muskoka Hospital Foundation. In total, $15,600 was awarded to help support a variety of projects geared to this year\u2019s theme of mental health and wellness.<\/p>\n

<\/broadstreet-zone><\/strong><\/div>\n

Lynn DeCaro, Executive Director of the Muskoka Community Foundation, noted that “the Foundation is excited to support these four organizations who are working so hard to support the Muskoka Community.” She further stated that “while working on the 2018 Muskoka Vital Signs Report it became very clear that organizations in Muskoka were identifying the need to increase mental health and wellness supports throughout their programming. We felt it was important to make this the theme for the 2019 Smart and Caring Muskoka Fund grants.”<\/p>\n

Each of this year\u2019s grant recipients are working on unique projects that will have a positive impact on the community. Jenn Pfrimmer and Sarah Caswell of Muskoka Seniors said the grant will allow their organization to provide transportation to rural clients so they can attend the weekly luncheons hosted by Muskoka Seniors. Caswell noted that “these individuals do not drive and face many barriers preventing them from attending the luncheons. This opportunity will allow them to share a meal and socialize with others.” Jen Pfrimmer added that “between October 1st<\/sup> and March 31st<\/sup> there are approximately twenty one luncheons. This grant allows us to reach individuals beyond the town limits of Huntsville who are at a greater risk for social isolation.”<\/p>\n

Muskoka Parry Sound Sexual Assault Services in partnership with the North Muskoka Nurse Practitioner Led Clinic in Huntsville are utilizing their grant to help build capacity amongst local clinicians so they can more effectively support men who have survived sexual abuse. Jen Nicholson, a social worker with the North Muskoka Nurse Practitioner Led Clinic, said the grant will used to provide a highly skilled two-day workshop locally for clinicians. Nicholson noted that this type of training is “often beyond the financial means of local agencies so to be able to offer this type of workshop locally is a positive step in male survivors and the clinicians that support them.”<\/p>\n

Leah Walker with the South Muskoka Hospital Foundation said their grant will be used to purchase a new IV pump for the emergency department of the South Muskoka Hospital. She indicated that the pump will be used to support patients that are experiencing a mental health crisis or are experiencing a drug overdose. Walker noted that “the treatment for a number of patients is to be given fluids or possibly an IV drip with the drug to reverse a drug overdose which can only be administered through an IV pump. It\u2019s an urgently needed piece of equipment as we are seeing an increase in patients experiencing a mental health crisis or drug overdose.”<\/p>\n

Nicole Moore of Muskoka Women\u2019s Advocacy Group said their grant will be used to support women taking part in an outreach program that will focus on individual mindfulness while connecting with other women and staying physically active outdoors. Moore added that “the grant will provide an opportunity for women who have experienced violence or abuse to take part in a workshop doing trauma informed work and healing out in nature guided by a facilitator. The lasting impact of the program is that participants can take the skills that they have gained and continue their healing and mindfulness work in nature.”<\/p>\n

DeCaro thanked the grant recipients for all of the work they do in the community and also to all of those who have contributed to the Smart and Caring Muskoka Fund over the last several years.<\/p>\n
