Their partner knows pretty exactly what the opener has. He knows that she has a Heart suit with less than opening points, which is at least six cards long, and which contains at least two of the top three honours, or three of the top five honours.

<broadstreet-zone zone-id="45658" keywords="" soft-keywords="true" zone-alias=""></broadstreet-zone>

Most players are aware that a good offense is an important part of the game of Bridge. An opening Weak-Two bid is a good offensive move because it makes it difficult for your opposition to bid accurately. If the opener opens with a Two-Spade bid, both opponents could be sitting there with 12 or 13 point opening hands. But they may be too nervous to make a Three-Heart overcall when they don’t know whether or not their partner has any support. They may never discover their nine-card fit in Hearts, and that they have enough points to make a game, until after the hand is played.

An opening Weak-Two Bid can also be advantageous defensively. Even when the opponents get to their contract, the opener’s team still has a chance of doing well. Because of the opener’s bid, the partner will know what to lead. As we all know, the right lead can scupper the success of a contract and make the opposing side go down, down, down. But even when you do get the contract and go down a trick or two, particularly not-vulnerable, a penalty can often give you a better score that letting your opponents play.

But I must stress again that it is important when you make an opening Weak-Two bid, that you have a good six-card suit. If most of your high-card points are in the six-card suit, such as, “xx AKxxxx xxx Qx,” that is much stronger hand than xx Qxxxxx AK xxx. I have occasionally seen reckless players open a Weak-Two bid with a hand much like the second hand. They seem to feel that any six-card suit will do. Occasionally, they get lucky and their partner has the missing honours. More often than not, they get doubled and go down big time. Their partner may not have any trump and not many points. By the way, do make sure that you check your vulnerability when bidding Weak-Twos.

If you wish to promote an activity in your Bridge group or ask a Bridge question, send the information to vrhead23@gmail.com and I will try to include it in this column.

NEW SOCIAL BRIDGE GAME IN HUNTSVILLE

Games are at the Active Living Centre on Thursdays at 7 p.m. in the multi-purpose room on the second floor (elevator) at the back entrance of the Canada Summit Centre.
