On the cover page of the June 2019 issue of ACBL\u2019s magazine, the Bridge Bulletin, is this statement: “Join bridge players across North America as they come together June 16 \u2013 23 to fight the darkness of Alzheimer\u2019s disease.”<\/p>\n

<\/broadstreet-zone><\/strong><\/div>\n

The American Contract Bridge League (ACBL) is our parent body of all Bridge in North America and Bermuda. ACBL has partnered with the Alzheimer\u2019s Society over the past seven years to raise nearly $5 million for the care, support and research efforts of Alzheimer’s disease in a project called The Longest Day.<\/p>\n

During the week of The Longest Day (summer solstice), participating clubs of ACBL run extra games with the proceeds going to the local Alzheimer Associations. For residents of Muskoka, the closest participating club is that of The Orillia Bridge Club.<\/p>\n

Come to Orillia for the seventh annual The Longest Day fundraising event. Event day is Wednesday, June 19, 2019. There will be three games at 9:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 3:15 p.m. Join us for one, two or all three games with prizes and refreshments all day long. There are extra points for the winners.<\/p>\n

Show the world how our fun game may help slow the onset of this disease. No reservation is necessary but please arrive with your partner at least ten minutes before game time.<\/p>\n

Why, you may wonder has ACBL picked the Alzheimer\u2019s Society as the charity to support? As you may be aware, with our aging population, Alzheimer\u2019s Disease has become a major scourge. It is a progressive illness that destroys the mental functioning of many, primarily older, members of society.<\/p>\n

No cure is presently available, but there are some things that patients can do to slow the progression of this dread disease. One of these is to get involved in activities that stimulate our brains. One activity that is particularly helpful is the game of Bridge. The game exercises our brains and also provides much-needed social interaction. The June issue of the Bridge Bulletin contains an article on page 33 that describes how one Bridge player is using the game of Bridge to help fight his problems with dementia. So, please come out and support the Longest Day games in Orillia on June 19, 2019. It will help provide desperately needed funds to fight Alzheimer\u2019s Disease.<\/p>\n

NEW SOCIAL BRIDGE GAME IN HUNTSVILLE
\n<\/strong>Games are at the Active Living Centre on Thursdays at 7 p.m. in the multi-purpose room on the second<\/sup> floor (elevator) at the back entrance of the Canada Summit Centre. Just come – with or without a partner. For information, please contact Donna or Peter Tikuisis at 647 471 1774 or donna.tikuisis@sympatico.ca.<\/p>\n

For now, this game will be played following Chicago Rules (allowing both fast and slow games). You will keep your same partner for the entire evening. Cost is $1.50 per person. Parking is outside the North Entrance opposite Heritage Village Railway Station.<\/p>\n

PORT CARLING SOCIAL BRIDGE CLUB
