The Huntsville High School track and field team worked hard for their successful results this year.<\/p>\n

<\/broadstreet-zone><\/strong><\/div>\n

The team first competed in the North GBSSA track and field day on May 13 in treacherous weather conditions where 34 athletes still managed to qualify for the GBSSA championships in 58 different events.<\/p>\n

The Hoyas’ first-place finishers that day were: Emma Elliott in the junior girls 100M, Gabrielle Arsenault in the senior girls 100M and 200M, Colin Hungerford in the senior boys 100M race, Cameron Heinz in the senior boys 3000M and the open boys 2000M steeplechase, Chloe Punkari in the open girls 2000M steeplechase, and Mark Cheek in the para boys 100M race and 800M.<\/p>\n

On May 22, the qualifying team members travelled to Midland for the GBSAA championships, another successful event for HHS. There, Huntsville had nine athletes qualify for 15 events at OFSAA Regionals.<\/p>\n

Highlights included:<\/p>\n

Sophia Marshall – 5th in junior girls 3000M
\nChloe Punkari – 3rd in midget girls steeplechase (after a bad fall at the beginning of the race), 2nd in Midget Girls 3000M
\nGabby Arsenault – 1st in senior girls 100M and 200M
\nOwen Johnstone – 4th in senior boys 1500M and 3000M
\nCam Heinz – 3rd in senior boys 1500M, steeplechase and 3000M
\nMark Cheek – 1st in para 100M and 800M
\nAdam Dupuis – 4th in senior boys steeplechase
\nEmma Elliott – 2nd in junior girls 100M
\nColin Hungerford – 2nd in senior boys 100M, 3rd in 110M hurdles<\/p>\n

\u201cWinning North GBSAA 100M and getting a personal best at GBs with a second place finish is such a great feeling,” said Emma Elliott. “Being able to compete at OFSAA Regionals against some incredible runners was amazing. Didn’t achieve this without great coaching and being part of this great group of Hoyas.”<\/p>\n

Her teammate, Gabrielle Arsenault, added, “I ran the 100M and 200M this year and ran some of my best times! I qualified for OFSAA regionals where I came 6th in the 100M and 10th in the 200M. I\u2019m very proud of myself and all of the others on the team. Our team really came together this year due to our amazing coaches and teachers, we were all supportive of each other and really became a family!\u201d<\/p>\n

HHS coach Catherine Smith said that this year the team had a good mix of sprinters and distance runners who worked hard with the team’s coaches. \u201cStephanie Parry has worked with the sprinters and she also coaches hurdles and relays. Pierre Mikhail has worked with the distance athletes. They have worked out five times a week! Laurie Clarke has worked with the field athletes. There are also another seven dedicated teachers who have made this team of 50 athletes come together with such great results. We start with snow all over the track in March, and have dealt with all the bad weather this spring\u2014we train rain or shine or snow.”<\/p>\n

On the first day of OFSAA Regionals on Wednesday, May 29, Cam Heinz won the 1500M race, and will represent HHS at OFSAA next week. Mark Cheek competed on day two of the OFSAA Regionals on Thursday, May 30 and came first in the SB Para category. He will move on to OFSAA in the 800M run.<\/p>\n
