Even small, seemingly insignificant things can have an impact. Like the tabs from pop and beer cans.<\/p>\n

You may think nothing of them as you toss a can into a recycling bag or haul a bunch to the Beer Store for return, but Karen Hewitt hopes you’ll give them a little thought in support of the residents at Fairvern.<\/p>\n

<\/broadstreet-zone><\/strong><\/div>\n

Friends of Fairvern is a volunteer organization that helps Fairvern residents in a variety of ways including mobility assistance, running Sunday teas, assisting with activities and encouraging resident participation.<\/p>\n

The Friends are currently collecting to raise money for the residents\u2019 group enjoyment. They are looking for beer and pop can tabs especially as they are aluminum and bring in the most money, but all tabs are appreciated.<\/p>\n

Hewitt has been a Friends of Fairvern volunteer for 15 years.<\/p>\n

\u201cI used to work for Muskoka Travel Service bus tours and most travellers were seniors. I loved helping the seniors and helped drive people for church services, so the Friends of Fairvern kind of came naturally. Some residents don\u2019t get visitors so just a few words makes a person feel like they\u2019re still a person,\u201d said Hewitt.<\/p>\n

Friends of Fairvern uses the money collected for items of group enjoyment such as a television for the lounge, fall mats, comfort items, and recreational games. They have also pledged $5,000 per year for five years to the new Fairvern build.<\/p>\n

\u201cA friend of our family wanted to do something for Fairvern when my daughter became a resident of Fairvern. When saving tabs was mentioned, Doug\u2019s daughter, Nicole, who works at the Beer Store in Huntsville, asked her boss if the store could become a drop-off depot for tabs,\u201d said Hewitt.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is a worthy cause and also has a personal meaning to my family,\u201d said Nicole Bower, staff member of the Beer Store. \u201cApproval was received and tabs are coming in! There are signs in the store as well as in Fairvern to let people know what is happening.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hewitt and her husband Ken sort the tabs at their house and take the tabs to All Ontario Recycling in Port Sydney to exchange them for money. They also add to the coffers as often as possible themselves.<\/p>\n

To donate tabs, drop them off at Huntsville\u2019s Beer Store (18 Hanes Road).<\/p>\n
