Their team name is in memory of Robin Crawford who died from pancreatic cancer in October 2015.<\/p>\n<p>Crawford was their coach that first year, an emotional experience, says team captain Dean Smales. She had been fighting hard and the group formed in support of her and her husband, David McGuey.<\/p>\n<p>They continue to ride in her memory, and also for every other family member and friend who has been affected by cancer in some way, says Smales. &#8220;It&#8217;s a good cause. Pretty much everyone is affected by cancer.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_13729\" style=\"width: 717px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13729\" class=\"size-full wp-image-13729\" src=\"https:\/\/media-doppleronline-ca.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/2016\/04\/Robin-and-Greg-Stewart-header.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"707\" height=\"336\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media-doppleronline-ca.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/2016\/04\/Robin-and-Greg-Stewart-header-630x299.jpg 630w, https:\/\/media-doppleronline-ca.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/2016\/04\/Robin-and-Greg-Stewart-header.jpg 707w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 707px) 100vw, 707px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-13729\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. Greg Stewart with Robin Crawford at the 2015 Ride to Conquer Cancer (file photo)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The ride is a two-day, 200-kilometre journey that begins in Toronto and ends in Niagara Falls.<\/p>\n<p>The team&#8217;s training efforts have been thwarted by lingering winter weather that has been followed by a cold, wet spring. &#8220;The weather is not cooperating\u2014it&#8217;s not exactly fun to go for a ride,&#8221; says Smales. &#8220;I\u2019d say we\u2019re not prepared but we\u2019re still going to go. We\u2019ll be okay.&#8221; He jokes that with both a pharmacist and a doctor on the team, they&#8217;ll be in good shape if they get into any trouble.<\/p>\n<p>Robin&#8217;s Rebels have raised more than $130,000 to date, and are aiming to raise at least $12,500 this year. They are about 70 per cent of the way there and are hoping the local community will help them reach their goal.
