Cal Truax has been playing basketball since he was two years old and plans to keep playing for many, many more years.<\/p>\n

<\/broadstreet-zone><\/strong><\/div>\n

A grade eight student at Pine Glen P.S., Truax is the co-captain of the U14 Hurricanes Basketball team, which recently earned a gold at the Ontario Cup. His coach, Chris Nikiforuk, describes him as a supportive teammate with consistent leadership skills in terms of focus, effort, skill, and positive attitude.<\/p>\n

Truax is a point guard and has racked up leading points in almost all of his games as a Hurricane.<\/p>\n

He has also played on school teams, as well as Next Level\u2014which travels out of Barrie each spring\u2014for the last three years.<\/p>\n

But he doesn’t just play basketball. A well-rounded athlete, Truax has also played volleyball, badminton, track and field, hockey, and soccer and is willing to try pretty much any sport. He enjoys participating in all of them, but there’s no question that basketball is his favourite. He mentioned that it seems kids have to choose to focus on a single sport at much younger ages now in order to be competitive, which can mean giving up others.<\/p>\n

But he has no regrets about his own choice of sport. “I play because I love the sport, the competition and being part of a team,” he said.<\/p>\n

His most memorable basketball moment so far was when he and his U14 Hurricanes team became the 2019 Division 11 Ontario Cup Champions, because the team moved up three divisions from the year before. “The Huntsville Hurricanes has been a good program to develop me as a player,” he added.<\/p>\n

He loved playing competitive basketball in the U.S. with his team Next Level and his dream is to one day return there to play at a higher level. “In a perfect world I would love to play at a university level someday, maybe even in the States.”<\/p>\n
