{"id":65935,"date":"2019-05-04T08:24:23","date_gmt":"2019-05-04T12:24:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/huntsville.dopperonline.ca\/?p=65935"},"modified":"2019-05-04T08:25:37","modified_gmt":"2019-05-04T12:25:37","slug":"athlete-of-the-week-mitchell-cox","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/doppleronline.ca\/huntsville\/athlete-of-the-week-mitchell-cox\/","title":{"rendered":"Athlete of the week: Mitchell Cox"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Mitchell Cox, a first-year student at Laurentian University, earned the title of 2018-2019 Male Rookie of the Year at his school after an exceptional year of swimming for the Voyageurs.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><broadstreet-zone zone-id=\"69896\" keywords=\"\" soft-keywords=\"true\" zone-alias=\"\"><\/broadstreet-zone><\/strong><\/div>\n<p>Cox\u2019s previous swim coach, Morgan Kierstead from the Muskoka Aquatic Club (MUSAC) said, \u201cI am very proud of Mitch and the progress he made in the pool during his first season with the Laurentian Voyageurs\u2026 His recognition of Rookie of the Year was well deserved!\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_65937\" style=\"width: 1090px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-65937\" class=\"size-full wp-image-65937\" src=\"https:\/\/media-doppleronline-ca.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/2019\/05\/Screenshot_20190504-080058_Word-e1556972514358.jpg\" alt=\"Mitchell Cox and his Coach Phil Parker from Laurentian University (supplied)\" width=\"1080\" height=\"1511\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-65937\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mitchell Cox and his Coach Phil Parker from Laurentian University (supplied)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Cox began swimming at the age of six because his mom wanted him to be a strong swimmer, and it was her who kept him swimming.<\/p>\n<p>By the age of 14, Cox was loving his time in the pool. As a MUSAC team member, he perfected his technique in Backstroke and Freestyle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMitch left our program for university with a lot of promise and he succeeded in achieving great performances throughout the season,\u201d added Kierstead.<\/p>\n<p>As a Voyageur swimmer, Cox racked up the medals during the 2018-19 swim season.<\/p>\n<p>He won a gold for a 200M Freestyle race; and silvers for a 200M Backstroke, a 100M Backstroke and a 4x100M Freestyle Relay.<\/p>\n<p>He says his best moment to date was winning the Bronze medal for his relay swim at the 2018-19 OUA (Ontario University Athletics) Championships.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was surreal to win a medal with the guys on my team,\u201d said Cox. He is also honoured to have been recognized as the Rookie of the Year for Laurentian University Athletics.<\/p>\n<p>Now home from his first year at university, he is back in the pool with MUSAC.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMUSAC is happy to have him back in the pool training with our Senior group and racing for us this summer at Provincials,\u201d said Kierstead.<\/p>\n<p>During the summer off-season, Cox plans to work on his skills to be an even better swimmer for his varsity team and to perform better as an individual swimmer for both next year\u2019s OUA Championships and for USPORTS (the rebranded Canadian Interuniversity Sport).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Don\u2019t miss out on Doppler!
