If you look at pictures of the winners at Bridge Tournaments and Club Games in bygone years, you will notice that the men all wore suits and ties and the women wore attractive dresses. Bridge Tournaments, and even Club Games, were considered to be special events where ladies and gentlemen dressed as they would for any important occasion. Recently, we played against two older women at a tournament who were dressed quite attractively. My husband complimented them on their attire. \u201cWell,\u201d one of the women huffed, \u201cafter all, this is a Bridge Tournament.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/broadstreet-zone><\/strong><\/div>\n

Not many women today adhere to this philosophy. They do enjoy the comfort of their slacks and even jeans, but they still dress well on top, by wearing a stylish jacket or blouse. And, they still wear their diamond rings which they flash every time they play a card.<\/p>\n

In recent years, however, the men have thrown out the former dress code for a more casual look, a much more casual look. Some dress in torn jeans with a faded, slogan-decorated, t-shirt encasing their rotund bellies. Sometimes, the shirt is decorated with a few smudges of ketchup from their morning breakfast of scrambled eggs. Often, this outfit is topped by a Blue Jays\u2019 baseball cap. Where\u2019s the game, guys?<\/p>\n

Oh, sorry, I got carried away! Now this diatribe doesn\u2019t apply to all men, nor even most. I did once play against a man wearing a cowboy hat. However, I\u2019ll give him a thumbs-up because his Stetson was part of a well-coordinated cowboy outfit which included attractively tooled reddish-brown coloured boots with a matching belt and a holster that held, not a gun, but his cell phone. His freshly-pressed Western-style shirt also looked sharp. Not surprisingly, I met him in a Club Game in Texas.<\/p>\n

Recently, I did meet an exceedingly well-dressed gentleman at a Duplicate Game in Ontario. He wore a dapper, obviously expensive suit with a dress shirt and tie. He was almost laughed out of the room by the other men. Apparently, he was a newly retired lawyer who had a closet full of suits and jackets that he didn\u2019t know what to do with, except to wear them to Bridge games. I doubt that his example will be enough to elevate the dress code in the local game.<\/p>\n

The American Contract Bridge League (ACBL) in Horn Lake, Mississippi, near Memphis, is the parent body for all Bridge related rules and regulations in the countries of Canada, USA, Mexico and Bermuda. ACBL sets Bridge rules and regulations for both Social Bridge and for Duplicate Bridge.<\/p>\n

Traditionally, Bridge players had a reputation for dressing well. ACBL is endeavouring to return to that image. There is a rumour afloat that ACBL is recommending that a dress code should be implemented as an effort to restore some of the previous decorum to the game of Bridge.<\/p>\n

ACBL is not insisting that male Bridge players must all dress as lawyers or cowboys. It just wants them to be neat, and to throw out their baseball caps. As for female players, some of the ACBL Executive are considering asking that women should be required to wear skirts and dresses. If these changes are adopted, players failing to adhere to the new dress requirements will lose one third of the points accumulated in a game. The bill will be introduced to the Executive on April 1, 2019. If it receives assent, it will come into effect immediately. Happy April Fools\u2019 Day!<\/p>\n
