FINDING KILLING LEADS AGAINS NO-TRUMP CONTRACTS<\/strong><\/p>\n

What a difference a lead can make! If your partner makes a killing lead to your long, solid Diamond suit when playing against a No-Trump contract, you can rack up six tricks in a hurry. If your partner unfortunately leads a small Club on this hand, your opponent may find the nine tricks he needs before you have a chance to get in with your strong suit and do some damage.<\/p>\n

<\/broadstreet-zone><\/strong><\/div>\n

So, how do you find the right lead. One way is to listen carefully to the bidding. Of course, if your partner has bid a suit, lead that one. If the opponents have bid three suits, lead the fourth one. If the opponents have bid the minor suits and only one of the majors, they are likely to be short in the unbid major, so lead that.<\/p>\n

If the opponents have opened in No-Trump and are bidding using the Stayman or Transfer conventions, it gives you a chance to double one of their artificial bids for lead direction. For example, the opponent on your left opens One No-Trump. Your partner passes. The opponent on your right bids Two Diamonds as a Transfer to Hearts. You want a Diamond lead to your six-card Diamond suit headed by the Ace, Queen, Jack. Double their artificial Diamond bid. If your partner is awake, he\u2019ll lead you a diamond the first time he\u2019s on lead.<\/p>\n

The Two-Diamond bid in this case is called an artificial bid because it says nothing at all about the opponent\u2019s Diamond suit. According to the agreement he has with his partner, he is saying that he has a Heart suit and he wants opener to bid it. Why does he go through this rigmarole? He wants the strong No-Trump hand to be hidden and the weak hand to be exposed in dummy for all the world to see.<\/p>\n

The lead-directing double also works when the opponent responds to his partner\u2019s One No-Trump bid by bidding Two-Hearts which is a transfer to Spades. Double the artificial Two-Heart bid to ask partner to lead a Heart. The same thing applies when Two Spades is bid as a transfer to a six-card Club suit or when Three Clubs is bid as a transfer to Three Diamonds. Double the artificial bid if you want your partner to lead that suit. You also can use this double when the responder to the No-Trump opening replies with a Stayman bid of Two-Clubs asking if opener has a four-card major. Double the artificial Two-Club bid when you want a Club lead.<\/p>\n

ALERT: Make sure you double only artificial bids for lead direction. Doubling a natural bid for lead direction could get you in to trouble.<\/em><\/p>\n
