Sue Dixon has had a lifelong love for horses and now she’s sharing both that passion and the therapeutic benefits of her big-hearted friends with others.<\/p>\n

After working at Kimberly-Clark for 34 years, she launched a new venture\u2014Partnering Horses with Humans\u2014which uses the wisdom of horses to help people change or understand their own behaviour. She became a certified Facilitated Equine Experiential Learning (FEEL) practitioner in 2016, and also has a degree in Sociology from the University of Waterloo.<\/p>\n

When she was eight, Sue’s dad brought home a racehorse, an impulsive decision that landed him on the couch for weeks, she says with a laugh, but it launched her love for the animals and the beginnings of understanding their behaviour.<\/p>\n

“(The horse) <\/span>was<\/span> pretty<\/span> wound<\/span> up,” recalls Sue. “T<\/span>hat<\/span> was<\/span> my<\/span> first<\/span> lesson<\/span> in trust<\/span> because<\/span> this<\/span> horse<\/span> wouldn’t<\/span> let<\/span> anyone<\/span> touch<\/span> his<\/span> head<\/span>. <\/span>He<\/span> wouldn’t<\/span> let<\/span> anyone<\/span> pick<\/span> up<\/span> his<\/span> feet<\/span>. <\/span>He<\/span> had<\/span> been<\/span> beat<\/span> up<\/span> somewhere<\/span> along<\/span> the<\/span> way a<\/span>nd<\/span> he<\/span> was<\/span> traumatized<\/span>. <\/span>But<\/span> he<\/span> would<\/span> let<\/span> me<\/span> pick<\/span> up<\/span> his<\/span> feet a<\/span>nd<\/span> he<\/span> would<\/span> let<\/span> me<\/span> touch<\/span> his<\/span> head b<\/span>ecause<\/span> I<\/span> was<\/span> an<\/span> eight-<\/span>year-<\/span>old<\/span> child<\/span> <\/span>and<\/span> he<\/span> trusted<\/span> me<\/span> and<\/span> I<\/span> trusted<\/span> him<\/span>.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Sue was devastated a few years later when they gave the horse away so she started riding lessons, and as a teen bought her own horse, a palomino named Texas Gold who sadly had to be euthanized due to a lung congestion. After working at the riding stables at Deerhurst Resort in the mid-1980s, Sue stepped away from horses for more than two decades but she never forgot that early love.<\/p>\n

Fast forward to 2009 when a horse named Eddie entered Sue’s life. He was her best friend and taught her to be confident riding again. But when Eddie broke his leg, Sue thought she’d never ride again. “I thought, ‘I’m never going to go through this heartbreak again,'” she says. But then she met Egalie (pronounced ee-GAL-ee), a handsome Clydesdale-Thoroughbred cross. Sue connected with him right away and says he helped mend her broken heart. But it wasn’t until after taking the FEEL course that she understood him on a deeper level.<\/p>\n

“Every<\/span> time<\/span> I’m<\/span> in<\/span> a<\/span> horse’s<\/span> company<\/span>, <\/span>I’m<\/span> better<\/span> after<\/span> being<\/span> in<\/span> their<\/span> company.<\/span> <\/span>I’m<\/span> more<\/span> peaceful<\/span>, <\/span>and<\/span> more<\/span> connected,” says Sue, adding that she didn’t really know why. She learned that their sensitive nature allows horses to be attuned to human emotions, and that learning to be calm in their presence is something akin to meditation.<\/span><\/p>\n

With her new business, Sue is able to help her clients incorporate<\/span> positive<\/span> change<\/span> in their own lives using the<\/span> horse’s<\/span> insight to recognize and reflect on their own behaviours and fears.<\/span><\/p>\n

“In<\/span> order<\/span> to<\/span> do<\/span> that<\/span>, <\/span>we<\/span> have<\/span> to<\/span> have<\/span> a<\/span> quiet<\/span> mind<\/span>, <\/span>otherwise<\/span> <\/span>the<\/span> horses<\/span> won’t<\/span> engage<\/span>. <\/span>So<\/span> mindfulness<\/span> is<\/span> a<\/span> cornerstone<\/span> of<\/span> the<\/span> work,” says Sue. “I<\/span>f<\/span> somebody<\/span> arrives<\/span>, <\/span>and<\/span> they’re <\/span>stressed<\/span> about<\/span> their<\/span> job and that is <\/span>going<\/span> through<\/span> their<\/span> body<\/span>, <\/span>the<\/span> horses<\/span> will<\/span> pick<\/span> up<\/span> on<\/span> that<\/span>. But <\/span>when<\/span> our<\/span> minds<\/span> are<\/span> quiet<\/span>, <\/span>and<\/span> we’re<\/span> in<\/span> the<\/span> company<\/span> of<\/span> the<\/span> horse<\/span>, <\/span>we<\/span> have<\/span> the<\/span> opportunity<\/span> for<\/span> a<\/span> profound<\/span> connection.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Horses don’t judge, adds Sue. “That’s<\/span> why<\/span> people<\/span> do<\/span> well<\/span> resonating<\/span> with<\/span> the<\/span> horse<\/span>\u2014t<\/span>hey<\/span> give<\/span> unconditional<\/span> support<\/span> and<\/span> love<\/span>. For some people, the only nonthreatening touch they can experience is with a horse, and so they can allow us to confront fear safely just because they have a large physical presence<\/span>.”<\/span><\/p>\n

And with an absence of electronics, being with a horse offers<\/span> someone the<\/span> opportunity<\/span> to<\/span> “just<\/span> be”, says Sue. “Horse wisdom allows people to find their own answers f<\/span><\/span>rom<\/span> within<\/span> their<\/span> own<\/span> intuition. M<\/span>y<\/span> role<\/span> is<\/span> <\/span>that<\/span> of<\/span> <\/span>a<\/span> facilitator\u2014<\/span>I’m<\/span> trained<\/span> to<\/span> read<\/span> horse<\/span> language, <\/span>I’m<\/span> trained<\/span> to<\/span> make<\/span> sure<\/span> it’s<\/span> a<\/span> safe<\/span> environment,<\/span> but<\/span> what<\/span> really<\/span> transpires<\/span> is<\/span> between<\/span> the<\/span> client<\/span> and<\/span> the<\/span> horse<\/span>, <\/span>I<\/span> just<\/span> help<\/span> them<\/span> translate<\/span> their<\/span> experience.”<\/span><\/p>\n

She has worked with students to help them learn skills that allow them to better focus and achieve more at school. She’s worked with people who have anxiety or depression or who struggle with self-esteem. She has worked with people who are bereaved. And every time she feels it’s a privilege to witness the powerful connection between a human and a horse.<\/p>\n

“Horses<\/span> give<\/span> us<\/span> an<\/span> opportunity<\/span> to<\/span> have<\/span> a<\/span> bond<\/span> and<\/span> just<\/span> spend<\/span> some<\/span> time<\/span> with a<\/span> majestic<\/span> animal<\/span> that<\/span> is<\/span> so<\/span> very<\/span> sensitive,” says Sue. “And<\/span> when<\/span> we’re<\/span> with<\/span> a<\/span> horse<\/span>, <\/span>we<\/span> have<\/span> to<\/span> focus<\/span> on<\/span> what’s<\/span> happening<\/span> right<\/span> now<\/span>. <\/span>So<\/span> it<\/span> takes<\/span> a<\/span> worried<\/span> mind<\/span> away<\/span> from what’s worrying<\/span> and that<\/span> starts<\/span> the<\/span> pattern<\/span> of <\/span>being<\/span> mindful<\/span> and<\/span> not<\/span> getting<\/span> caught<\/span> up<\/span> in the worry.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Sue works with horses in both Muskoka and Orillia. Egalie’s home is in Orillia, where Sue also works with a horse named Presto. In Muskoka, she works with horses Reba and Steve and Mojo at Sugar Foot Farm near Utterson. Both locations have indoor arenas so she can help her clients year-round.<\/p>\n

“I’m<\/span> truly<\/span> privileged<\/span> to<\/span> do<\/span> the<\/span> work<\/span> I do because<\/span> it’s <\/span>very<\/span> rewarding<\/span> and<\/span> I<\/span> get<\/span> to<\/span> work<\/span> with<\/span> people<\/span> and<\/span> horses,<\/span> and<\/span> I<\/span> love<\/span> both,” she says.<\/span><\/p>\n
