{"id":60363,"date":"2019-01-02T13:13:19","date_gmt":"2019-01-02T18:13:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/huntsville.dopperonline.ca\/?p=60363"},"modified":"2019-01-02T13:13:19","modified_gmt":"2019-01-02T18:13:19","slug":"new-distracted-driving-laws-in-effect-as-of-jan-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/doppleronline.ca\/huntsville\/new-distracted-driving-laws-in-effect-as-of-jan-1\/","title":{"rendered":"New distracted driving laws in effect as of Jan. 1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>A message from the OPP Central Region<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Members of the Ontario Provincial Police in Central Region wish to highlight the updated distracted driving laws which came into place yesterday.<\/p>\n<div style=\"float: left; margin-right: 14px;\"><strong><broadstreet-zone zone-id=\"45658\" keywords=\"\" soft-keywords=\"true\" zone-alias=\"\"><\/broadstreet-zone><\/strong><\/div>\n<p><strong>What hasn&#8217;t changed?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Distracted driving is a broad term that can encompass any behaviour that takes the operator&#8217;s attention away from operating their vehicle.There are three main types of distraction:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Visual &#8211; taking your eyes off the road<\/li>\n<li>Manual &#8211; taking your hands of the wheel<\/li>\n<li>Cognitive &#8211; taking your mind off what you&#8217;re doing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Drivers who cause a collision or exhibit very poor driving directly related to being inattentive (eating, drinking, reading a map etc.) <em>could<\/em> be charged with Careless Driving. The fines and demerit points for Careless Driving remain unchanged.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What has changed as of January 1, 2019 surrounding the offence of Distracted Driving?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As of January 1, 2019, the penalties for driving with a <strong>hand-held wireless communication device<\/strong> (a portion of distracted driving) have increased for motorists in Ontario:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"m_-1562492542120519472ql-align-justify\">Fine increases up to $1,000<\/li>\n<li class=\"m_-1562492542120519472ql-align-justify\">3 demerit points for a first offence<\/li>\n<li class=\"m_-1562492542120519472ql-align-justify\">3-day licence suspension<\/li>\n<li class=\"m_-1562492542120519472ql-align-justify\">Penalties rise for subsequent convictions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Novice drivers (G1, G2, M1 or M2) who are convicted of distracted driving will receive the same fines, but will receive longer licence suspensions as opposed to demerit points.
