Resolutions. Love ’em or hate ’em, at their best they’re a reminder that we can always do better at something; at their worst they’re a sometimes unwelcome reminder that we are all fallible and imperfect. But even that can be a good thing. Author Brene Brown nailed it when she said: “Want to be happy? Stop trying to be perfect.”<\/p>\n

\n
In the spirit of self-improvement, we asked local citizens and councillors if they make resolutions and, if they do, what they have planned for 2019.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

No traditions to speak of, but I did want to remember what I was doing and where I was when 1999 turned into 2000, so I elected to babysit my two granddaughters.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m constantly setting mini resolutions during the year because I like getting into new projects. This year I want to embrace slow living and get back to the sort of thing my grandma would have taken the time to do. I want to learn now to make preserves, possibly some peaches and my own salsa!<\/p>\n

I have a significant birthday to celebrate in 2019. I have decided to run 40k for my 40th, but not all at once! I am going to do four 10k races, and hopefully have some friends join me doing the 10 (or the 5k) for my local race: Band on the Run. One friend, who has never run before, has downloaded an easy app called “Couch to 5k” to help her get started, which is the same app I used to start running. Another resolution is to unpack and get organized in my new house, since I just moved!<\/p>\n

As this year comes to an end, I\u2019m feeling the pull towards mindfulness in respect to my physical self. I\u2019ve turned 40 this year and as I begin this decade I\u2019m feeling a resolve to treat my body better. I\u2019ve already quit drinking alcohol, replacing it with kombucha and other equally as satisfying drinks, and I now would like to add in a practice of mindful eating and exercise.<\/p>\n

My resolution this year, besides try to shed some unwanted pounds, is to budget my money better. John. D Rockefeller was a rather fiscally intelligent man so I plan to follow his 10-10-80 rule in 2019. From every pay check save 10 per cent, tithe 10 per cent and live on the remaining 80 per cent.<\/p>\n

When you think of a New Year’s resolution, you think of getting into that perfect body perspective but this year I want to get into that \u201cfeel good perspective!” In 2019 I am going to practice saying “no”. No, I am not able to help you do this; no, I am wearing myself thin etc. I want to turn 2019 into \u201cme and you\u201d time…. time to spend with my partner, who is back into cancer treatments, time to spend with him at our summer island home, time to spend with my children and grandchildren, bonding and sharing traditions and laughs, and lastly time for just myself.<\/p>\n

My resolution this year is not to rush because I rush everywhere! This doesn\u2019t mean to not be on time, it means allowing more time to get from A to B and allow time for the job to be done well with excellence. It also means saying no to some things and focusing on the things that I\u2019m good at doing. I\u2019m going to try my hardest to stop rushing around and stop panicking about how it\u2019s all going to get done and enjoy every moment! Lord knows i need to slow things down, and let the goodness sink in! Don\u2019t rush! There\u2019s no panic in heaven!<\/p>\n

It is my hope that during the next year the Town of Huntsville will lead by example in making our municipal operations more environmentally sustainable. I\u2019d like to look at best management practices in all municipalities to determine the best way forward on reduction, reuse and recycling. My personal resolution will be a much greater emphasis on reducing and reusing, especially around the use of single-use plastics in my household.<\/p>\n

My New Year’s resolution is very different this year, and is close to my heart. My baba (grandmother) passed away last year, and she was wonderful at embroidery and hand-making doilies. I wish I had asked her to teach me these skills, so I am going to spend the new year learning how to make these beautiful pieces like she could, and loved doing.<\/p>\n
