\u201cWe have a really great volunteer base in Huntsville,\u201d says Wendy McConnell.<\/p>\n

She would know. Wendy has been involved in many of Huntsville\u2019s major sporting events, all of which have relied on volunteers for their success. She\u2019s now the volunteer co-chair, along with Ruthann Cook, for the Huntsville 2019 Ontario 55+ Winter Games, which will be coming to town March 5-7, 2019. \u201cI have no doubt that local volunteers will once again step up to make these the best Games ever,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

About 150 volunteers are needed for the Games, which will bring almost 1,000 participants\u2014along with their families and supporters\u2014to Huntsville.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a big variety of volunteer roles available,\u201d says Wendy. \u201cNo matter what your interests or how much time you can commit, there\u2019s something for everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n

Because the Games competitions happen mid-week and during the day, the volunteer positions are ideal for retired people and seniors\u2014the Games, after all, are about healthy, active, and engaged aging. Volunteering for the Games is also a great opportunity for community supporters of all ages to help give the participants a warm welcome to Huntsville.<\/p>\n

This community is well known for its exceptional events and that\u2019s due in large part to the volunteers who greet our visitors, make them feel at home, and work tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure they have a great experience while they are here.

There are 10 sports for the Huntsville 2019 Ontario 55+ Winter Games, being hosted at 14 venues across Muskoka. Most are in the Huntsville area, but competitions are also being held in Burk\u2019s Falls, Baysville, Bracebridge and Gravenhurst. Volunteers are needed both in the lead up to and during the Games, and at all of the sporting locations.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need people to welcome and register participants at local hotels, team and bus ambassadors, greeters for the sport venues, medical personnel, people to help with food services, scoring and timekeeping, drivers to provide transportation, photographers for the events, people to act as general runners, and more,\u201d says Wendy. You can see all of the available volunteer roles at huntsville2019.ca\/volunteer<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n

To register as a volunteer, you will first need to register with the town as you would for a leisure program and then you can sign up from there. If you encounter difficulties, visit the customer service desk at the Canada Summit Centre or call the Games office at 705-789-6421 ext 3043.<\/p>\n

The Games will also leave a volunteer legacy, says Wendy. \u201cWe\u2019ll be providing a full day of first aid and CPR training in January, free of charge to a limited number of registered volunteers. Those skills will remain in the community for volunteers to use in future events and in their own lives.\u201d<\/p>\n

Games volunteers will get up to speed on their duties and the expectations of the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport at volunteer information sessions in February.<\/p>\n

And, of course, there\u2019s volunteer swag\u2014each volunteer will receive a Huntsville 2019-branded long-sleeved t-shirt and toque as thanks for their participation.<\/p>\n
