{"id":57851,"date":"2018-11-08T05:15:16","date_gmt":"2018-11-08T10:15:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/huntsville.dopperonline.ca\/?p=57851"},"modified":"2018-11-07T20:19:06","modified_gmt":"2018-11-08T01:19:06","slug":"treating-people-who-use-drugs-with-dignity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/doppleronline.ca\/huntsville\/treating-people-who-use-drugs-with-dignity\/","title":{"rendered":"Treating people who use drugs with dignity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b> <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Submitted by the <span class=\"s1\">Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Stereotypes about people who use drugs are making it more difficult to provide treatment and prevent overdose, the Simcoe Muskoka Opioid Strategy (SMOS) says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">In a campaign running through the fall, the coalition hopes to shift thinking, to create greater understanding and respect for people who use drugs, whether prescription or illicit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cSimilar to what occurs with mental health, people tend to hide their use of drugs to avoid the stigma that would be attached to them,\u201d said Claudia Swoboda-Geen, a public health nurse with the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit. \u201cFor those using drugs, hiding their use can prevent them from seeking treatment out of fear of being shamed, or losing their jobs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">The prevailing image of people who use drugs revolves around people who are marginalized and experiencing homelessness. This is a portion of the population of people with addiction, but Swoboda-Geen stressed that it can happen to anyone, regardless of their social or economic status.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cAnd regardless of their social or economic status, they all need to be treated with respect by family, friends, employers, service providers, and by society as a whole,\u201d she said. \u201cGreater acceptance will allow those people to come forward to seek help when they want and need it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">This campaign is a collaboration between the health unit and the Simcoe Muskoka Opioid Strategy (SMOS), a collective comprehensive strategy aimed at reducing opioid harms in Simcoe and Muskoka.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">More information on the campaign can be found at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smdhu.org\/realpeople\"><span class=\"s3\">www.smdhu.org\/realpeople<\/span><\/a> or by calling Health Connection at 705-721-7520 or 1-877-721-7520, weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Don\u2019t miss out on Doppler!
