RUFF ON THE SHORT SIDE<\/strong><\/p>\n

A ruff occurs when a player uses a trump to take a trick when he does not have a card in the suit led. Sometimes he is able to ruff because he was dealt a void. Sometimes, he plays cards in a suit creating a void so he can ruff for extra tricks.<\/p>\n

<\/broadstreet-zone><\/strong><\/div>\n

To get extra tricks by ruffing with trump, the declarer trumps on the \u201cshort side<\/strong>.\u201d<\/strong> For example; the trump suit is spades. There are five spades in one hand and three spades in partner\u2019s hand. If you lead out the five cards in the \u201clong side\u201d trump hand, you will get a maximum of five tricks. If you have a void in clubs in the long hand, and ruff with two trump, you will still only get a maximum of five trump tricks. However, if the void is in the trump short side, and you ruff two tricks, you may get five tricks plus two for a total of seven possible trump tricks.<\/p>\n

You can certainly use the trump on the long side for entries, for control to stop the opponents from running a suit, or for getting rid of losers, but don\u2019t figure that you\u2019re making extra trump tricks when using trump on the long side. You would get the same number of tricks in any case.<\/p>\n

Sometimes you have a void in both the trump long side and short side hands. Then you may be able to do a crossruff to score trumps in both hands. When doing a crossruff, it is wise to cash your honours in the remaining suits early in the play. Otherwise, the opponents may get in by ruffing one of your potential winners and will likely lead trump to reduce your ruffing power.<\/p>\n
