{"id":5206,"date":"2015-10-09T13:55:22","date_gmt":"2015-10-09T17:55:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/huntsville.dopperonline.ca\/?p=5206"},"modified":"2015-10-20T18:05:53","modified_gmt":"2015-10-20T22:05:53","slug":"candidates-on-a-long-campaign-trail-and-their-single-most-important-issue","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/doppleronline.ca\/huntsville\/candidates-on-a-long-campaign-trail-and-their-single-most-important-issue\/","title":{"rendered":"Candidates on a long campaign trail and their single most important issue"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With under two weeks left in one of the longest election campaigns in modern Canadian history, we stopped the candidates on October 5 in Dwight, their last public debate in Muskoka, to ask them how they\u2019re faring and what they think is the single most important issue in this election.<\/p>\n<p><strong><broadstreet-zone zone-id=\"45658\" keywords=\"\" soft-keywords=\"true\" zone-alias=\"\"><\/broadstreet-zone><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Conservative MP Tony Clement says it&#8217;s job creation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Job creation, which has been one where again I\u2019ve proven myself in terms of local jobs being created either through the infrastructure that we\u2019ve done or the small businesses that we have supported, and I\u2019m very proud of my record.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is the incumbent&#8217;s fourth election campaign in Parry Sound-Muskoka. How is he faring?<\/p>\n<p>Clement said he\u2019s been able to get to lots of &#8220;nooks and crannies&#8221; in the riding that sometimes you don\u2019t have time to in your usual five-week election campaign, although, he noted, he does knock on doors year-round as the representative for the area.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"modern-quote full\"><p>\u201cI\u2019ve been able to knock on a lot of doors. I passed my millionth step of door-knocking, which is about 714 kilometres.\u201d <cite>Tony Clement<\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Clement said the reception has been great. \u201cPeople seem to appreciate the amount of work I\u2019ve done in the riding, my commitment to the riding and that, combined with policies that they think are on the right track, makes me feel very hopeful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Liberal Party candidate Trisha Cowie says it&#8217;s the economy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat continually comes up at almost every single door that I\u2019ve knocked on and it\u2019s been thousands of doors. People are either concerned for their own economic sustainability or they\u2019re worried about their kids being able to live here and find jobs here\u2026 just all around something needs to be done to help the people on the ground at a grass roots level to find jobs and help grow the economy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In terms of the campaign, Cowie said it\u2019s been a long campaign but she\u2019s still stoked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou would think that by this point I\u2019d be getting a little bit tired, but actually it\u2019s done the opposite for myself. You know we\u2019ve stuck it out for so long and worked this hard for so long, that now it\u2019s time to kick it up a notch,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"modern-quote full\"><p>&#8220;We\u2019re in the last legs of the race, so to speak, and the team is getting re-energized.\u201d <cite>Trisha Cowie<\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Green Party candidate Glen Hodgson says it&#8217;s climate change<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have talked about all these other issues but at the end of the day climate change and our changing environment is going to have a huge impact on our future, the future of our country, the future of our province and the future of Parry Sound-Muskoka.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Can you imagine what would happen if people couldn\u2019t swim the lakes in this region, if the fish started dying and if people couldn\u2019t come up for those recreational opportunities, questioned Hodgson.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan you honestly tell me, knowing that those are possibilities with climate change, that climate change does not affect the economy? Can you honestly tell me that if we have trouble drinking the water or if it makes us sick, that climate change doesn\u2019t affect healthcare? It is definitely the number one issue. It\u2019s the biggest threat facing our future. It is the biggest threat facing us in Parry Sound-Muskoka and we need to have real leadership on this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In terms of the election, he said it has been a long campaign but at the same time it has enabled him to get around to talking to a lot more people.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"modern-quote full\"><p>\u201cI think it\u2019s the second longest in history and that\u2019s certainly been a challenge, but it\u2019s not a challenge that we as Greens would back down from.\u201d <cite>Glen Hodgson<\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Hodgson said the reception from the public has been great, people are always respectful and appreciative of the democratic process, which is one of the reasons he loves the Parry Sound-Muskoka riding. He did say a long campaign definitely favours the incumbent and makes it harder on the other candidates, who may not be able to take eleven weeks off work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCertainly a party like the Green Party with a more limited budget \u2013 and a philosophy that says we don\u2019t want to spend all of those taxpayer dollars, we think that\u2019s ridiculous \u2013 can be disadvantaged by a long campaign,\u201d he said. \u201cI think it was clearly done for a reason and that is unfortunate, but, that being said, we\u2019re not letting it stop us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>NDP candidate Matt McCarthy says it&#8217;s healthcare<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople everywhere in Muskoka are concerned about where\u2019s our local hospital going to be. I don\u2019t believe we should be in that situation where we\u2019re making excruciating choices like where\u2019s our local healthcare going to be. The federal government is only providing 20 per cent of the healthcare funding in the provinces,\u201d he said. \u201dWe need to make sure that the federal government steps up to its original commitment to provide its fair share of healthcare funding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In terms of the campaign, he said while Canadians deserve a chance to think thoroughly about what the parties are proposing, it does not need to be done with so much time leading up to an election.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"modern-quote full\"><p>\u201cPeople should be getting a chance to discuss what the government is doing between elections.&#8221; <cite>Matt McCarthy<\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>McCarthy said this lengthy election campaign is putting an enormous burden on not only candidates, but Elections Canada \u201cwhich has seen its costs double throughout this election campaign and now Canadians are going to have to pay for it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Canadian Action Party candidate Gordie Merton says it&#8217;s the people<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe poverty, the voices, the way that the parties corral the people during election time and then ignore them the rest of the time. I\u2019m a simple kind of person, even off the campaign, when I\u2019m at home people come by my house, I try to help them as much as I can but I don\u2019t like these facades that these parties put up\u2026 because once you vote them in you never see them again,\u201d he said, adding, \u201cThe whole system has ignored the people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Asked how the campaign is going, he said It wasn\u2019t long enough. \u201cIn order to produce the right information you need a long time&#8230; there are a lot of things,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"modern-quote full\"><p>Calling an election really early, I think they did it strategically because they know that everybody is going to scramble. I had to scramble.\u201d <cite>Gordie Merton<\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Merton added that candidates should be getting to know the people they represent and talking to them more regularly, not just during an election.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5242\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/media-doppleronline-ca.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/2015\/10\/DSC_3082.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5242\" class=\"wp-image-5242 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/media-doppleronline-ca.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/2015\/10\/DSC_3082-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_3082\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media-doppleronline-ca.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/2015\/10\/DSC_3082-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/media-doppleronline-ca.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/2015\/10\/DSC_3082-1024x681.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5242\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Marxist-Lenninist Party candidate Albert Smith discusses his ideas with a member of the public at the Algonquin Theatre, before the start of the debate there.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Marxist-Leninist Party candidate Albert Smith says it&#8217;s the renewal of the democratic process<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy that we mean getting rid of the first-past-the-post system in the election and having members of Parliament represent their ridings rather than represent their parties to their ridings.\u201d He also lamented the divisiveness in Parliament as a result of parties \u201cgoing at each other,\u201d which contributes to \u201cinaction,&#8221; along with the bickering between the provincial and federal levels of government.<\/p>\n<p>He said a lengthier campaign has given the candidates an opportunity to really discuss ideas and get to know one another. \u201cI enjoy that. I think that\u2019s a good idea and so far so good,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Election Day is October 19.
