{"id":5089,"date":"2015-10-07T13:56:56","date_gmt":"2015-10-07T17:56:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/huntsville.dopperonline.ca\/?p=5089"},"modified":"2015-10-08T09:15:14","modified_gmt":"2015-10-08T13:15:14","slug":"pumpkins-are-a-conversation-starter-for-mental-health","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/doppleronline.ca\/huntsville\/pumpkins-are-a-conversation-starter-for-mental-health\/","title":{"rendered":"Pumpkins are a conversation starter for mental health"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In support of Mental Health Awareness Week, Robinson\u2019s Your Independent Grocer has launched its annual Painted Pumpkin Project.<\/p>\n<p>Mental Illness Awareness Week kicked off on October 5 and runs until October 10 and is an annual national education project of the Canadian Alliance on Mental Illness and Mental Health. This year&#8217;s team is ACT!ON MENTAL HEALTH and supporters, advocates and decision makers are encouraged to take part in discussions about improving the mental health system.<\/p>\n<div style=\"float: left; margin-right: 14px;\"><strong> <broadstreet-zone zone-id=\"45658\" keywords=\"\" soft-keywords=\"true\" zone-alias=\"\"><\/broadstreet-zone><\/strong><\/div>\n<p>The public is invited to come to the community room at the store and paint a pumpkin or take a decorated one home. These are not ordinary pumpkins. Some are adorned with rhinestones and ribbons, and others have polka dots or funky designs. The cost for a pumpkin is $6 and all of the proceeds will be directed to the Canadian Mental Health Association for Muskoka-Parry Sound.<\/p>\n<p>This is the second year Robinson\u2019s has done the project for the local branch of the health association. The first year proceeds went to the Table Soup Kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is not something you go home and make a pie with,\u201d said store manager Maggie Rittenhouse. \u201cThe pumpkins create conversation and I want the conservation to be about mental health.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rittenhouse said that mental illness is in her family and some of the staff members have experience with it as well.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone knows somebody\u2026 and they might not even know it. I\u2019m trying to help bring it out in the open so people will talk about it. There\u2019s a real stigma around having mental illness and I want to get past that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not only do the pumpkins support a great cause, but another plus is that they\u2019re disposable. People are buying a fresh decoration which means they are a renewable resource, too.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5082\" style=\"width: 1414px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/media-doppleronline-ca.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/2015\/10\/painted-pumpkins.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5082\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5082\" src=\"https:\/\/media-doppleronline-ca.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/2015\/10\/painted-pumpkins.jpg\" alt=\"Painted Pumpkin Project at Independent.\" width=\"1404\" height=\"1074\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media-doppleronline-ca.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/2015\/10\/painted-pumpkins-300x229.jpg 300w, https:\/\/media-doppleronline-ca.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/2015\/10\/painted-pumpkins-1024x783.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/media-doppleronline-ca.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/2015\/10\/painted-pumpkins.jpg 1404w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1404px) 100vw, 1404px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5082\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">That&#8217;s 360 pumpkins you see. Some have already been decorated or you can decorate one yourself. Proceeds go toward the local branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re doing something fun and there\u2019s an upside to it as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last year, 300 pumpkins were sold through the Painted Pumpkins initiative.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"modern-quote full\"><p>\u201cThe pumpkins create conversation and I want the conversation to be about mental health.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Suzanne McEachran, project coordinator for the local branch of the mental health association, indicated that she and Rittenhouse originally connected last year through the Painted Pumpkin Project.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were the beneficiaries, which was awesome,\u201d she said, adding that due to the fact Rittenhouse as well as staff have been impacted by the organization themselves, the cause is \u201cnear and dear to their hearts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McEachran explained the Canadian Mental Health Association Muskoka-Parry Sound is funded through the Local Health Integration Network and receives funding from the provincial government to cover the cost of addiction and mental health service for clients with OHIP. A few of the local staff have some funding as part of their positions to do some education in schools but the organization doesn&#8217;t receive ongoing sustainable funding in order to do public education and prevention work in the community.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ecxMsoNormal\" style=\"font: 12pt\/22.72px 'Times New Roman', serif; margin: 0px 0px 1.35em; color: #444444; text-transform: none; text-indent: 0px; letter-spacing: normal; word-spacing: 0px; white-space: normal; widows: 1; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal; background-color: #ffffff; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px;\"> \u201cIt goes full circle,\u201d said McEachran. \u201cIn doing the Painted Pumpkin Project it provides a greater opportunity for public education, and raising money allows us to provide more public education.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Canadian Mental Health Association plays an important role in improving people\u2019s understanding of mental health and mental illness.
