Fairvern’s board of directors has been recognizing the long-term care home’s staff with an annual award of excellence since 2002. Staff are nominated for the award, which was renamed the Dr. Harold Robinson Award of Excellence in 2008 in honour of the home’s former medical advisor and his commitment to excellence, by their peers.<\/p>\n

All full-time and part-time staff are eligible to be nominated, and must meet at least three of five criteria that include dedication, positivity, creativity and innovation, responsiveness to resident needs, and contribution to Fairvern’s core value and and its vision.<\/p>\n

<\/broadstreet-zone><\/strong><\/div>\n

The winner receives a gold Award of Excellence pin, a trophy, and a day off with pay; a runner-up receives a silver Award of Excellence pin and a certificate of recognition.<\/p>\n

The nominees this year were:
\nAngela Grayer, RPN and RAI Specialist
\nKaren Jeffries, RN Team Leader
\nMarlene Muller, PSW
\nJuliana Renton, Cook
\nKaren Spencley, Environmental Aide<\/p>\n

Amy Jolkowski was also a nominee, but is no longer an employee of Fairvern. Prior to leaving, she was presented with a silver Award of Excellence pin.<\/p>\n

The winner and runners-up were chosen by a committee of the board of directors.<\/p>\n

The runners-up were Marlene Muller and Juliana Renton.<\/p>\n

Comments from Muller’s nominators included: “Marlene often goes above and beyond her duties to help make Fairvern a better place…She is sensitive to resident needs and her fellow coworkers. Marlene is upbeat, dedicated and a joy to work with.”<\/p>\n

Comments from Renton’s nominators included: “Juliana continually goes above and beyond…Juliana always makes the residents feel special. She never walks through the living room to say hi to one of them. Juliana tries to always see the positive and to keep things light.”<\/p>\n

The winner was Karen Spencley. Comments from her nominators included : “Karen is the epitome of the whole-home team concept. She regularly steps out of her job routine to assist residents, staff and families with a smile and a sense of humour.”<\/p>\n
