First it was pies in the face<\/a><\/span>. Then it was a chilly (7.8\u00b0C!) dip in the Muskoka River<\/a><\/span>. And this year, the staff at ProActive Rehab continued their annual tradition of holding a creative fundraiser in support of Hospice Huntsville’s Hike for Hospice with a round of egg roulette.<\/p>\n

ProActive clients made donations to the cause in the name of the staff member they most wanted to see play the game. The top two donors got to do the honours with the staff who raised the most money.<\/p>\n

On Friday, May 4, Norma Cockwell and Ian Dique each broke six eggs on the heads of Stacey Van Schyndel and Sarah Tyler. Of the dozen, 11 were hard-boiled, one was raw. And it came down to the final two eggs in the tray. (Watch the video at the end of the post to see who got the ‘raw deal’.)<\/p>\n

“For the cause, it’s a worthwhile endeavor, said Dique. “When you think of the families dealing with all the things they have to deal with, it’s a responsibility we all have (to support Hospice).”<\/p>\n

But he said there is one small problem: payback. “When I’m getting my massage, I know the next one will be more deep tissue, so there might be a lot of screaming. I’ll probably pass out, but it’s for the cause.” And was it worth it? “Yes, it was.”<\/p>\n

ProActive Rehab owner, Leslie Tempest, said, “We have made it a team mission to find something slightly unpleasant and yet fun for us to put out there as a motivating challenge to our clientele, some encouragement to get back at their therapy team or however they might see it and to encourage donations to this worthy cause.”<\/p>\n

She added that hospices in general and Hospice Huntsville in particular provide a service of great value to the community and rely on donations from the community to continue providing those services.<\/p>\n

The egg roulette fundraiser brought in $2,600 for Hike for Hospice, more than the last two years combined.<\/p>\n

The fundraiser is “an excellent way to raise public awareness about Hospice Huntsville but also getting different people in the community involved in having fun to raise money,” said Melissa Polischuk, Fund Development & Public Relations Coordinator for Hospice Huntsville.<\/p>\n

Hike for Hospice is on May 6, starting at noon in River Mill Park. There’s still time to register as a hiker or to make a donation (you can do both by clicking here<\/a><\/span>). Registered participants receive a free hot dog or sausage. Event-day registration opens at noon, with a celebration of life at 1:00 with Rev. Derek Shelly. The hike begins at 1:15.<\/p>\n

Wear your purple best in support of the cause. The event aims to raise $55,000 through hike pledges, the annual Purple Tea Party<\/a><\/span> which was held on April 7, and donations to the purple boots stationed at stores around town.<\/p>\n
