The contract is Four-Spades. I think she realizes that she will lose a couple of top Spade tricks so she postpones leading trump. But the losing Spade tricks will not disappear. She will have to lose them eventually, and by delaying tackling the suit, she may lose more Spade tricks than necessary.<\/p>\n<p>She starts out taking her good Heart tricks. Then she leads the King of Diamonds to set up that suit. Sooner or later, one of our opponents with a small trump ruffs our good Queen of Diamonds or another of our good cards.  My partner grumbles under her breath. When she gets in again, she finally begins to draw trump. By this time, she has lost a couple of tricks which might have been avoided if she had got rid of the opposition\u2019s trump immediately.<\/p>\n<div style=\"float: left; margin-right: 14px;\"><strong><broadstreet-zone zone-id=\"45658\" keywords=\"\" soft-keywords=\"true\" zone-alias=\"\"><\/broadstreet-zone><\/strong><\/div>\n<p>But, despite this problem, there are good reasons, as follows, to delay drawing trump.<\/p>\n<p>Suppose you are playing in a Spade contract. You have five Spades in your hand and three Spades on the board in dummy. If you take out the trump immediately, you will make up to five trump tricks. If you notice that the dummy has a void, singleton or doubleton in Hearts, you may make some extra trump tricks by playing Hearts from your hand until you can ruff them with a Spade in dummy. If you had begun the play of the hand by drawing trump you could not have won these extra trump tricks. Once you\u2019ve accomplished ruffing these Heart tricks, then get the trump out.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes, when you first lead your trump suit, you discover to your horror that they are split badly. You have an eight-card fit with dummy in your Spade trump suit. This means that the opponents have five Spades. Most often they are split three in one hand and two in the other. But, this is not always the case. What do you do if all five are in West\u2019s hand with none in the East hand, or perhaps four are in one hand and just one in the other?<\/p>\n<p>If you draw trump, you are using two of your trump to get one of theirs. So, hold off drawing trump to keep control. In this situation, it may be wise to search out some ruffing opportunities to make as many of your trumps on the short side (usually dummy) as good as possible. Also, you may have to play out your good cards in other suits to force your opponent to use up her trump. I know it hurts to see your opponent ruff your good Ace of Clubs, but this increases the value of your trump holding.<\/p>\n<p>Another situation occurs when your partner\u2019s hand comes down. Great, she has the Ace and King of the trump suit\u2014but no other high cards! In your hand, you are missing a couple of Kings in Clubs and Diamonds. How do you get to the board to finesse these two suits? The only entries to dummy are the trump honours. Use one of these honours to get to the board and make the first finesse. Use the second honour to get to the board again, and make the second finesse. Then, draw the rest of the trump.<\/p>\n<p>So, it\u2019s desirable in most cases to get the trump out immediately.
