Fourteen years after her death, Kelly Shires’ legacy lives on.<\/p>\n
The 19th<\/sup> Annual Kelly Shires Breast Cancer Snow Run, an event Shires co-created with friend Suzy Stenoff, was held from February 2 to 4 at Hidden Valley Resort. The all-women snowmobile event raises funds to offer financial assistance for breast cancer patients<\/a><\/span> across Canada. This year the event raised more than $485,000 from fundraising efforts and corporate sponsorships; it has raised more than $5.5 million to date.<\/p>\n Event coordinator Suzy Stenoff enlightened the crowd with her genuine speech. \u201cThank you for being here and helping to raise the money to be here. After doing this for 19 years, it\u2019s crazy that the need for this financial assistance is still a very strong need through Canada, so thank you for that.\u201d<\/p>\n The group held a moment of silence to recognize their loved ones that are currently battling cancer and those lost along the way, especially Kim Sparks, Tracey Guthrie and Kelly Shires. Then the crowd broke into song and dance to the event theme song chosen by Shires: “Man I Feel Like a Woman” by Shania Twain.<\/p>\n Kelly Shires’ spirit was truly felt by all of the 102 vibrant women that attended the 2018 Snow Run.<\/p>\n Although Kelly is no longer physically here with us, I hope for those of you who hadn\u2019t had the chance to meet Kelly, you can feel her energy and spirit within the event and feel a love of life she had for people, so thank you for keeping her dream alive. The ladies welcomed 27 newcomers to the event, supported by the Royal Challenge bring-a-friend program. For every pair that raised $1,250 each, Royal Distributing donated $2,000 to the important cause.<\/p>\n Riders participated in a fun-filled weekend which included a meet and greet on Friday, opening ceremonies on Saturday with the ride to Kearney for lunch followed by an evening banquet for all in attendance, and a Sunday morning buffet.<\/p>\n Much fun was had by all!
