They say close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades.<\/p>\n

Well, Serge Dubreuil did better than come close this summer, as the Huntsville man took first place in his group at the Canadian Horseshoe Pitching Championships in St. Stephen, New Brunswick.<\/p>\n

Competing in the Men’s M division, Dubreuil went 10-5 with 63 ringers over the three day tournament held at the Garcelon Civic Center from August 11-15. There were 210 entries from eight Canadian provinces competing in seven different divisions.<\/p>\n

Since 1979, the Canadian Championships have alternated between the eastern and western provinces (in Eastern Canada on odd numbered years, Western Canada on even years) offering all Canadians the chance to take part and promote the game in their region.<\/p>\n

Just how good are these players?<\/p>\n

This year’s overall Men\u2019s division winner, Quebec\u2019s Andre Leclerc, threw 67.75% of his shoes for ringers over the course of the tournament for his ninth title. On the women’s side, Sylvianne Moisan won her 19th championship with a 68.77% ringer rate, the highest among all participants. The full results of the four day tournament can be found on the Canadian Horseshoe Association website here.<\/a> Next year’s Canadian championships will be on the west coast in Victoria, British Columbia.<\/p>\n
