{"id":42248,"date":"2018-01-04T16:59:44","date_gmt":"2018-01-04T21:59:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/huntsville.dopperonline.ca\/?p=42248"},"modified":"2018-01-04T17:26:51","modified_gmt":"2018-01-04T22:26:51","slug":"enliven-opens-office-support-people-living-cancer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/doppleronline.ca\/huntsville\/enliven-opens-office-support-people-living-cancer\/","title":{"rendered":"Enliven opens office to support people living with cancer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today, the Enliven Centre for Self Care opened an office to continue its support for people living with cancer.<\/p>\n<p>Two years ago, Allie Chisholm-Smith, instructor and owner of Ahimsa yoga studio, and Joanne McLean, co-owner of Soapstones, created Enliven to help ensure that no one \u2014 not those with a cancer diagnosis nor their caregivers, not cancer survivors nor those grieving loved ones who have died from the disease \u2014 feels alone.<\/p>\n<div style=\"float: left; margin-right: 14px;\"><strong><broadstreet-zone zone-id=\"45658\" keywords=\"\" soft-keywords=\"true\" zone-alias=\"\"><\/broadstreet-zone><\/strong><\/div>\n<p>Their goal is to provide self-care services and support through workshops, programs and other resources, and to reduce social isolation for those going through an extremely difficult time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe believe that in normalizing the conversation around cancer, people will feel less powerless and victimized. Our workshops strive to educate people in options on all levels \u2014 physical, mental and spiritual, and on allopathic, alternative and integrative medicine,\u201d said Chisholm-Smith.<\/p>\n<p>Enliven is principally funded through grants and crowdfunding donations. Participants in the programs can also donate if they are able to, although they don&#8217;t require payment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis has been a really busy time for us with emails and phone calls from people needing support \u2014 from grieving widows to patients with difficult diagnoses,\u201d said Chisholm-Smith.<\/p>\n<p>Local skincare business, Soapstones, recently created a line of products called Enliven and donates a percentage of sales to the Enliven organization.<\/p>\n<p>As of November, the Soapstones Enliven line has raised over $2,500, funds that have already been put to use to establish the office.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_42271\" style=\"width: 1424px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-42271\" class=\"size-full wp-image-42271\" src=\"https:\/\/media-doppleronline-ca.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/2018\/01\/Soapstones-Enliven-products.jpg\" alt=\"The Soapstones Enliven products have helped to fund a new office for the organization (supplied photo)\" width=\"1414\" height=\"672\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media-doppleronline-ca.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/2018\/01\/Soapstones-Enliven-products-300x143.jpg 300w, https:\/\/media-doppleronline-ca.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/2018\/01\/Soapstones-Enliven-products-1024x487.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/media-doppleronline-ca.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/2018\/01\/Soapstones-Enliven-products.jpg 1414w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1414px) 100vw, 1414px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-42271\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Soapstones Enliven products have helped to fund a new office for the organization (supplied photo)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Enliven office has an open-door policy \u2014 anyone who needs support is welcome to drop in \u2014 and will be open Thursdays from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCancer issues need face-to-face, not just online support,\u201d said Chisholm-Smith. \u201cNow we can offer people a friendly face, an open space with resources and a safe place to be.
