Try some of these out and let us know how much your crowd liked them.<\/p>\n<div style=\"float: left; margin-right: 14px;\"><strong><broadstreet-zone zone-id=\"45658\" keywords=\"\" soft-keywords=\"true\" zone-alias=\"\"><\/broadstreet-zone><\/strong><\/div>\n<h4>Appetizers<\/h4>\n<h5><strong>Garlic Baguette Chips (recipe courtesy of Dale Peacock)<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Ingredients:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1 small baguette sliced thinly \u2013 1\/8\u201d or so&#8230;slice as thinly as possible.<br \/>\n1\/4 cup olive oil<br \/>\n2 1\/2 teaspoons garlic or onion powder<br \/>\nSalt to taste after cooking<br \/>\n(You may need to make double of this mixture depending on the size of the baguette)<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Directions:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Slice baguette in thin slices.<\/li>\n<li>Combine the olive oil and garlic powder and mix well.<\/li>\n<li>Place slices (if you want on parchment paper) on a cookie sheet side by side and touching to maximize space.<\/li>\n<li>Brush oil mixture on each slice of baguette, stirring the mixture between brushings to maintain an even flavour.<\/li>\n<li>Bake in a 350\u00b0F oven for about 10 minutes or until golden brown.<\/li>\n<li>Sprinkle lightly with salt while still hot.<\/li>\n<li>Store in an air-tight container.<\/li>\n<li>Serve with red pepper jelly or guacamole or hummus for dipping.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h5><\/h5>\n<h5><strong>Bacon Wraps (recipe by <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">theartofdoingstuff.com<\/span>), makes 60 pieces<\/strong><\/h5>\n<div id=\"attachment_42014\" style=\"width: 434px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-42014\" class=\"size-full wp-image-42014\" src=\"https:\/\/media-doppleronline-ca.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/2017\/12\/Bacon-Wraps.jpg\" alt=\"Bacon Wraps (Photo: theartofdoingstuff.com)\" width=\"424\" height=\"424\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media-doppleronline-ca.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/2017\/12\/Bacon-Wraps-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/media-doppleronline-ca.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/2017\/12\/Bacon-Wraps-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/media-doppleronline-ca.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/2017\/12\/Bacon-Wraps.jpg 424w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 424px) 100vw, 424px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-42014\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bacon Wraps (Photo: theartofdoingstuff.com)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>One of Doppler&#8217;s writers made these as an appetizer over the Christmas holidays to a chorus of OMGs from guests.<\/p>\n<p>The author of the blog, Karen Bertelsen, notes that, 1. the mix of ingredients sound horrifying (don&#8217;t let that stop you) and, 2. when people try them they will ask for the recipe (true).<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Ingredients:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1\u00bd pounds of bacon, each piece sliced in half<br \/>\n20 slices of white bread, crusts cut off<br \/>\n1\/4 cup of Dijon mustard<br \/>\n1 can sweetened condensed milk<br \/>\n2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese<br \/>\n1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce<br \/>\n(You&#8217;ll also need toothpicks to hold the pieces together)<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Directions:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Preheat oven to 375\u00b0F.<\/li>\n<li>Mix together condensed milk, Worcestershire sauce, and Dijon mustard.<\/li>\n<li>Flatten bread with rolling pin.<\/li>\n<li>Lay three strips of bacon side by side. Lay a single piece of bread on top.<\/li>\n<li>Smear with a large tablespoon of the condensed milk mixture.<\/li>\n<li>Top with a fingerful of shredded cheese.<\/li>\n<li>Roll up tightly.<\/li>\n<li>Secure each bacon piece with a toothpick.<\/li>\n<li>Lay bacon wraps on a rack over a foil-lined cookie sheet to catch drips. Also line the bottom rack of your oven.<\/li>\n<li>Bake until bacon is cooked to your liking (approximately 45 minutes &#8211; 1 hour)<\/li>\n<li>Cut, or break each piece off so you have individual, bite sized pieces, each with their own toothpick.<\/li>\n<li>Serve warm.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>You can also make these ahead and refrigerate them for up to two days and then reheat them in a microwave or under a broiler. It&#8217;s delicious any time of year, on its own or paired with a main dish. Don&#8217;t let the long list of ingredients fool you \u2014 they&#8217;re mostly for the dressing and this comes together pretty quickly.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Ingredients:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>6 medium sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into cubes<br \/>\n\u00bd cup olive oil or vegetable oil<br \/>\n\u00bc cup of orange juice<br \/>\n1 tbsp of sugar<br \/>\n1 tbsp of cider or white wine vinegar<br \/>\n1 tbsp Dijon mustard<br \/>\n1 tbsp finely chopped onion<br \/>\n1\u00bd tsp poppy seeds<br \/>\n\u00bd tsp grated orange peel<br \/>\n\u00bd tsp grated lemon peel<br \/>\n2 medium tart apples, chopped<br \/>\n2 green onions, thinly sliced<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Directions:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>In a large saucepan, cook sweet potatoes in boiling, salted water until just tender, about 20 minutes. Cool completely. (You can also roast the cubed sweet potatoes instead until fork-tender.)<\/li>\n<li>Meanwhile, combine the next nine ingredients (oil, orange juice, sugar, vinegar, mustard, onion, poppy seeds, orange peel and lemon peel) and mix well to make the dressing.<\/li>\n<li>Combine cooled sweet potatoes, apples and green onions in a bowl. Toss with dressing. Best if refrigerated for several hours or overnight.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<hr \/>\n<div style=\"float: left; margin-right: 14px;\"><strong><broadstreet-zone zone-id=\"45658\" keywords=\"\" soft-keywords=\"true\" zone-alias=\"\"><\/broadstreet-zone><\/strong><\/div>\n<h4>Main<\/h4>\n<h5>Fondue Broth (adapted from geniuskitchen.com)<\/h5>\n<p>What New Year&#8217;s Eve would be complete without fondue? This broth is easy to prepare, not fussy like cheese fondue, and can be served indoors or outside over a fire (just not a roaring one). You could even take it along in a thermos on a winter ski or snowshoe afternoon and keep it hot over a small stove.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Ingredients:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>2 bay leaves (optional)<br \/>\n2 garlic cloves (or 3 or 4 or 5 \ud83d\ude42 ), minced<br \/>\n2 tsp dried parsley (optional)<br \/>\n2 tsp fresh pepper (or to taste)<br \/>\n2\u00bd cups of reduced-sodium beef broth (vegetable broth would work, too)<br \/>\n1 cup of dry white wine or water<br \/>\n2 cups of water<br \/>\n1 pkg of French Onion soup mix<br \/>\n\u00bc cup seafood sauce<br \/>\n(Plus items for dipping \u2014 see below)<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Directions:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Mix ingredients in a pot and simmer for one hour.<\/li>\n<li>When ready to start, transfer to fondue pot and bring broth to a boil or near-boil.<\/li>\n<li>For cooking in the broth: vegetables like blanched broccoli or cauliflower, parboiled potatoes, or mushrooms; large, raw tiger shrimp; thinly sliced steak; precooked meatballs; Udon noodles (cooking these in advance will help keep them from sticking together)&#8230; or whatever else you want to cook.<\/li>\n<li>WHEN YOU&#8217;RE DONE, DON&#8217;T THROW OUT THAT LEFTOVER BROTH! Pour it back into a pot and throw in any leftover dipping ingredients, or prepare some extra for this purpose. It makes a delicious soup for the next day.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<hr \/>\n<h4>Dessert<\/h4>\n<h5>Deconstructed S&#8217;mores Fondue<\/h5>\n<p>If you&#8217;re already in the fondue zone, why not have it for dessert, too?<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_42015\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-42015\" class=\"size-full wp-image-42015\" src=\"https:\/\/media-doppleronline-ca.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/2017\/12\/Smores-fondue.jpg\" alt=\"Deconstructed s'mores fondue (Photo: reneeskitchenadventures.com)\" width=\"400\" height=\"403\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media-doppleronline-ca.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/2017\/12\/Smores-fondue-298x300.jpg 298w, https:\/\/media-doppleronline-ca.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/2017\/12\/Smores-fondue.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-42015\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Deconstructed s&#8217;mores fondue (Photo: reneeskitchenadventures.com)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This recipe is adapted from allrecipes.com, but there&#8217;s one at <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.reneeskitchenadventures.com\/2015\/06\/easy-smores-fondue.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reneeskitchenadventures.com<\/a><\/span> that you could try, too.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Ingredients:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips<br \/>\n2 tbsp butter<br \/>\n1 can sweetened condensed milk<br \/>\n2 tbsp water<br \/>\n1 tsp vanilla extract<br \/>\n1 pkg marshmallows<br \/>\n(Plus graham crackers and fruit for dipping)<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Directions:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>In a heavy saucepan, over medium heat, melt chocolate chips and butter with condensed milk and water. Cook and stir constantly until thickened, about five minutes. Remove from heat and add vanilla.<\/li>\n<li>Transfer to an oven-proof ceramic fondue pot (or any ceramic pot if you don&#8217;t have a fondue-specific one). Cover top of chocolate with marshmallows and place under broiler until browned. Watch closely \u2014 they can go from brown to burnt quickly.<\/li>\n<li>Serve warm in fondue holder, or if you don&#8217;t have one then just warm the mixture in a microwave for 20-30 seconds if it cools too much.<\/li>\n<li>For dipping: graham crackers, grapes, pineapple chunks, banana slices, apple wedges, pear slices, mandarin orange sections&#8230;or whatever else you want to dip.<\/li>\n<li>Keep leftover chocolate sauce in the fridge for snacking.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<hr \/>\n<h4>Snacks for on the go<\/h4>\n<p>These suggestions for snacks to pack for winter excursions like snowshoeing and cross-country skiing come courtesy of Algonquin Outfitters. They&#8217;re great for warm-weather hikes, too.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Tortilla wraps filled with nut or seed butter, dried fruit and nuts, or with chicken and vegetables<\/li>\n<li>Crackers with pepperettes and cheese sticks<\/li>\n<li>Hummus with veggies and crackers<\/li>\n<li>Jerky<\/li>\n<li>Dehydrated fruit like apples, bananas, pears, mango, peaches or strawberries. Combine with nuts to make your own trail mix.<\/li>\n<li>If you&#8217;re bringing a small stove along, prepare one-pot meals in advance and carry in plastic bags or reusable containers: warm up some wieners and beans; cook some rice and then add beans; cook pasta, drain the water and add sauce and cheese.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Enjoy and Happy New Year!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Don\u2019t miss out on Doppler!
