But it can also be a deadly time of the year. The Muskoka Fire Prevention Officers are urging everyone to pay special attention when<br \/>\ncooking during the holidays, and to drink responsibly. Provincial statistics reveal that careless cooking is the number one cause of fires and the second leading cause of fatal fires.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe hustle and bustle of the holidays can dramatically increase your risk of having a fire,\u201d said Georgian Bay Fire Chief Tony Van Dam. \u201cAll too often, these fires are started by unattended cooking and in many cases alcohol is involved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Smoking is another leading cause of fires during the holiday season. \u201cMake sure smokers extinguish cigarettes in large deep ashtrays \u2013 not in plant pots which may contain peat moss or shredded bark that can easily ignite,\u201d continued Chief Van Dam. \u201cAshes should be emptied in a metal container \u2013 not the garbage can \u2013 and put outside away from combustible materials on a non-combustible surface.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-41389\" src=\"https:\/\/media-doppleronline-ca.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/2017\/12\/Holiday-fire-safety-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"707\" height=\"546\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media-doppleronline-ca.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/2017\/12\/Holiday-fire-safety-1-300x232.jpg 300w, https:\/\/media-doppleronline-ca.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/2017\/12\/Holiday-fire-safety-1.jpg 707w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 707px) 100vw, 707px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Muskoka Fire Prevention Officers also remind everyone about the law requiring working smoke alarms on every storey of the home and outside all sleeping areas. Take a few minutes to test your smoke alarms and make sure everyone in the home knows exactly what to do if the smoke alarms sound in an emergency. Develop and practice a home escape plan with everyone in the home.<\/p>\n<div style=\"float: left; margin-right: 14px;\"><strong><broadstreet-zone zone-id=\"45658\" keywords=\"\" soft-keywords=\"true\" zone-alias=\"\"><\/broadstreet-zone><\/strong><\/div>\n<p>Enjoy a fire safe holiday season by following these tips:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Stay in the kitchen when cooking. Cooking is a major cause of home fires, so don\u2019t leave the kitchen if there\u2019s something cooking on the stove. If a pot catches fire, don\u2019t try to move it. Cover the pot with a lid to smother the flames and turn off the burner.<\/li>\n<li>Keep things that can burn such as cooking utensils and paper towels a safe distance from the stove as they can easily ignite if they are too close.<\/li>\n<li>Keep an eye on any drinkers in your household and make sure all cigarettes are properly extinguished and the stove is off before going to bed.<\/li>\n<li>Cigarettes can smoulder among upholstered items for hours before igniting. Check sofas and chairs for cigarettes that may have fallen between the cushions. Provide large, deep ashtrays and request that your guests smoke outside.<\/li>\n<li>Drink responsibly. Excessive alcohol consumption is a contributing factor in many residential fires.<\/li>\n<li>Install and maintain working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms outside all sleeping areas of the home. Smoke alarms also are required on every storey.
