THE ASKING BID<\/strong><\/p>\n

There are several bids in bridge that \u201cask\u201d your partner a question. By an appropriate bid, it is just like saying \u201cPartner do you have \u2026\u2026?\u201d It is perfectly legal to use an \u201casking bid\u201d as long as your opponent is made aware of the fact that the bid is not what the opponent might expect. This is done by way of an \u201cAlert\u201d by the bidder\u2019s partner. The opponents are always entitled to know any agreement you have with your partner. You cannot have secret bids between you and your partner.<\/p>\n

<\/broadstreet-zone><\/strong><\/div>\n

One such \u201casking bid\u201d is \u201cPartner, do you have a stopper in diamonds?\u201d You do not ask the actual question but the methodology produces the same result. This \u201casking bid\u201d is used when you are trying to get to a three no-trump contract. You and your partner have bid three suits. It is your turn to bid after partner has bid at the three club level. You do not have a stopper in the unbid suit, diamonds. If you had a stopper (ace or king little) you would just bid three no-trump. By bidding three diamonds you are therefore asking partner for a stopper. Voila! Either your partner bids three no-trump or partner bids a suit and you pass! Partner must inform the opponents that the three diamond bid is asking for a stopper, not telling that the bidder has diamonds!<\/p>\n
