Representatives from four local healthcare organizations were all smiles today as Mayor Scott Aitchison presented them with the proceeds from the annual Mayor’s Charity Golf Tournament, held September 7 at the Mark O’Meara Golf Course.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis year\u2019s tournament was the most successful tournament to date,\u201d said Aitchison. \u201cI would like to express my gratitude to everyone who came out and played as well as the thirty-six sponsors and their generous support.\u201d<\/p>\n

The tournament raised $56,036, which was split between the Huntsville Hospital Foundation (HHF), Fairvern Nursing Home, Muskoka Women’s Advocacy Group (MWAG) \u2014 a new recipient this year \u2014 and Christine’s Place.<\/p>\n

Katherine Craine, Executive Director of the Huntsville Hospital Foundation, noted how important funding like this is to all of the beneficiaries. “You can only do so much as an organization. All of these organizations here are probably short-staffed… This type of third party event helps us to build capacity and when someone does that in the community it really helps us to grow and meet our needs and work for the mission. On behalf of the board of directors and everyone at the hospital, we want to thank all of you for helping. It’s a very generous community and a generous business community and we couldn’t do it without you.”<\/p>\n

The funding will help HHF continue to raise money for equipment in the hospital that is needed now, noted Craine.<\/p>\n

The funding is particularly important for organizations like Muskoka Women’s Advocacy Group, which runs Muskoka’s women’s shelters.<\/p>\n

“This is the first time we’ve supported this group and you should know that it’s because Muskoka Women’s Advocacy Group is struggling right now,” said Mayor Aitchison. “That’s horrifying to me, so I’ve been speaking out about it quite regularly and I was pleased to be able to support them a little bit this year with the tournament.”<\/p>\n

Rachelle Walker, MWAG’s executive director, thanked Aitchison for his long-term support. “Back in 2007, just before the shelter was up and running, Scott was very instrumental, and put forth a lot of energy and time, in helping getting things up and running. When we were offered to be a recipient of the golf tournament, it’s another demonstration of (his) commitment to end violence against women and children and it means a lot to us.”<\/p>\n

Chrysalis women’s shelter in Huntsville has 10 beds and the organization has another 10 rent-geared-to-income apartment units for women and children to rent for a year. The funding will allow MWAG to continue to provide women and children with quality services, said Walker.<\/p>\n

Councillor Jonathan Wiebe, also representing Lovegrove Construction, said, “This is really an apolitical event in my eyes. The recipients are so important and valuable to the community.”<\/p>\n

Mayor Aitchison, on behalf of the tournament committee, thanked the event’s many sponsors (noted below) and volunteers. Devonleigh Homes has already come on board as the tournament’s presenting sponsor for next year, slated for early September 2018 at Deerhurst Resort. The hope is that there will be enough participants to fill both of the resort’s 18-hole courses. One hundred and sixteen golfers participated in 2017.<\/p>\n

Updates will be posted at Huntsville.ca<\/span><\/a> in early spring of 2018.<\/p>\n
