When I introduced this useful three part convention last week, I pointed out that you, the responder, after partner\u2019s strong Two Club opening, have only three choices to bid: 1) Bust 2) Waiting 3) Positive. Today, Part Two, I will concentrate on the \u201cWaiting\u201d response. Remember, from last week, the \u201cBust\u201d response of Two Hearts is your artificial bid for a hand that does not contain at least one Ace, or one King or two Queens.<\/p>\n

If your hand does contain at least one Ace, or one King or two Queens, you will make a Waiting Bid of Two Diamonds. This is an artificial bid. It says nothing about Diamonds. It is a bid that is FORCING TO GAME because you have at least three or four points. (Three or four Jacks don\u2019t count because Jacks are over-valued by the point count system.) Three points plus 22 points guarantees 25 or more points, which is enough to have a shot at making a game in No Trump or a major suit.<\/p>\n

After your Two Diamond Waiting Bid, Opener is the Captain because only she knows the approximate assets held by both partners. After all, she may have 22 points and stop at game or 35 points and consider slam. After the Waiting bid is made, each partner bids their hand showing their suits but does not stop short of game. If a fit in a suit is found, Opener will bid game or investigate a slam in that suit. If all suits are bid, Opener may take the contract to a game or slam in No Trump.<\/p>\n

<\/broadstreet-zone><\/strong><\/div>\n

In Bridge, almost always there are exceptions. Opener may stop before game is reached if she can\u2019t find a fit in Three No Trump or four of a major. She may stop if she reaches Four Clubs or Four Diamonds, and doesn\u2019t think the partnership has the 27 points needed for the five level minor suit game.<\/p>\n

Please remember if you have less than three or four points, bid Two Hearts Bust so Opener knows you have that worthless hand. Do not make a Waiting Bid with these extremely poor hands.<\/p>\n

If you have eight or more points and a good five-card suit, you will make a Positive bid of the suit (next week\u2019s column \u2013 Part Three).<\/p>\n
