{"id":39253,"date":"2017-10-26T07:37:37","date_gmt":"2017-10-26T11:37:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/huntsville.dopperonline.ca\/?p=39253"},"modified":"2017-10-26T09:51:57","modified_gmt":"2017-10-26T13:51:57","slug":"women-of-distinction-from-across-muskoka-honoured","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/doppleronline.ca\/huntsville\/women-of-distinction-from-across-muskoka-honoured\/","title":{"rendered":"Women of Distinction from across Muskoka honoured at gala"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Main photo: YWCA Muskoka Women of Distinction Award recipients (back from left) <span class=\"s1\">Bonnie Dart, Nicole Manion, Norma Connolly, Michelle Emson; (front from left) <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Dawn Novak, Brenda Wood, Candace Yule, and Debby Andrews. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>With over 250 guests in attendance and stories from some of Muskoka&#8217;s most incredible ladies, the 16th annual YWCA Muskoka Women of Distinction Gala made the community proud.<\/p>\n<div style=\"float: left; margin-right: 14px;\"><strong><broadstreet-zone zone-id=\"45658\" keywords=\"\" soft-keywords=\"true\" zone-alias=\"\"><\/broadstreet-zone><\/strong><\/div>\n<p>Each year, the Women of Distinction Gala celebrates incredible women in Muskoka who deserve recognition for their accomplishments.<\/p>\n<p>This year&#8217;s event, held October 25 at the Mark O\u2019Meara clubhouse in Huntsville, featured a dinner, silent auction, keynote speaker Nancy Osborne, and, of course, the awards ceremony.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ywcamuskoka.com\/\">YWCA Muskoka<\/a>, a not-for-profit organization, strives to implement change in Muskoka so that women and girls can thrive and lead, safely. The YWCA values include leadership, dignity, transparency, inclusivity, diversity, and sustainability, thus creating a strong platform for women in the Muskoka area to seek support and form a healthy community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe YWCA is one of the most important organizations in Muskoka,\u201d said Huntsville Mayor Scott Aitchison. \u201cIt\u2019s our responsibility to not only inspire women, but empower them.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The gala also celebrated the YWCA\u2019s 20th anniversary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe anniversary is cause for celebration!\u201d said Hannah Lin, executive director of the YWCA. \u201cWe are the smallest community in Canada to develop a YWCA. It\u2019s so important in a rural area to create social connections and support for women.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Huntsville native and Women of Distinction nominee, Kathleen May, has devoted her life to supporting and liberating women. Not only does she work for the Huntsville and Bracebridge women&#8217;s shelters, but she volunteers at various organizations around the area including the Muskoka Women\u2019s Advocacy Group and the Huntsville Women\u2019s Group. She\u2019s also a mentor for sexual assault services and works on their helplines.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"modern-quote full\"><p>I love how the gala celebrates women and brings them together here in Muskoka.<br \/>\n<cite>women of distinction nominee Kathleen May<\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The eight award recipients were:<\/p>\n<p>Transformational Award &#8211; Brenda Wood (Huntsville)<br \/>\nArts, Culture and Creative Energy &#8211; Michelle Emson (Bracebridge)<br \/>\nYoung Woman of Distinction &#8211; Candace Yule (Gravenhurst)<br \/>\nBusiness Innovation and Entrepreneurship &#8211; Nicole Manion (Bracebridge)<br \/>\nCommunity Development and Social Activism &#8211; Dawn Novak (Utterson)<br \/>\nHealth, Sports and Wellness &#8211; Norma Connolly (Huntsville)<br \/>\nMentorship &#8211; Bonnie Dart (Gravenhurst)<br \/>\nLifetime Achievement &#8211; Debby Andrews (Bracebridge)<\/p>\n<p>Norma Connolly\u2019s family expressed how proud of her they are. \u201cMy mom inspired me to go to school to be a nurse,\u201d said Jordan Connolly, Norma\u2019s son. \u201cWhen she comes home from work it\u2019s all she talks about. She\u2019s so passionate about her patients and everyone can see the love and care she puts into their lives. I\u2019m really proud of her.
