Every year thousands of Canadians are victimized and millions of dollars are lost through the many forms of fraud, according to members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP). This month the OPP would like to bring to your attention the Canada Revenue Fraud.<\/p>\n

You may get a phone call from a person aggressively telling you to pay the taxes you owe. This person will claim to be from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). It might sound something like this:<\/p>\n

<\/broadstreet-zone><\/strong><\/div>\n

“The reason behind this call is to notify you that the (CRA) have registered a criminal case against your name concerning a tax evasion and tax fraud in the federal court house. So if you want any further information about this case, please make sure you give us a call back as quick as possible to our direct hotline number to the Canada Revenue Agency Headquarters. That is 613-927-9919<\/a>, I will please repeat the number, it is613-927-9919<\/a>. If we don\u2019t receive a call from your side, please be prepared to face the legal consequences, as the issue of tax is extremely serious and time-sensitive. So have a blessed time.”<\/p>\n

In July 2015 the Government of Canada sent out a notice on their website advising all Canadians of this scam. The OPP would like to remind the public that the Canada Revenue agency (CRA) does not contact clients over the telephone for the purpose of collecting fines to avoid being arrested, and (CRA) never asks for payments to be made through a private money transfer service provider.<\/p>\n

Anyone who receives this type of a call should hang up immediately, and report the incident to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre by telephone at1-888-495-8501<\/a>, through their Web site or by email. If you suspect you or someone you know has been a victim of fraud, contact your local police service or CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-8477<\/a> (TIPS) or online at https:\/\/www.tipsubmit.com\/<\/a><\/p>\n
