You pick up your Bridge hand. A few face cards flash by. You have enough points to open. Too bad you have just a minor suit to bid, but that\u2019s OK. You open One Diamond. Partner bids One Heart. His new suit is forcing for one round. What is your second bid? It is now your responsibility to try to limit your hand.<\/p>\n

<\/broadstreet-zone><\/strong><\/div>\n

Partner hasn\u2019t limited his hand. He could have 6 to 30 points. If you have 4 Hearts, even small ones, and your hand is in the minimum range for an opener of 12 to 14 points, you can raise partner\u2019s One Heart bid to Two Hearts. He is now the Captain and is in a position to place the contract. If his bid is a minimum 6 to 9 points, he knows game is unlikely. He will PASS. If he has a medium hand of 10 to 12, he can jump to Three Hearts inviting you to raise to game if you are medium (15 to 17 points) or maximum (18 to 21) for your opening bid.<\/p>\n

If responder has a stronger hand (13 to 18 points) he can show that the partnership has at least game by taking the contract to Four Hearts immediately. That leaves it to you to consider Slam bidding. Or with the stronger hand, partner can make a forcing bid that may lead to a slam.<\/p>\n

If when responder bids One Heart and you can\u2019t support Hearts, you could bid One No Trump to show your minimum opening hand. However, you can\u2019t do this if the big, bad opposition has jumped in with a One Spade bid for which you have no stoppers. Do remember that normally the bid of a new suit by an unpassed partner is forcing for one round; you must find a bid. However, when the opponents elbow into the auction you may PASS to show your minimum opening hand and leave it up to responder to go further.<\/p>\n

If when responder bids One Heart and you can\u2019t support Hearts but you have a medium hand (15 to 17 points), you bid a new suit without jumping. Partner again becomes the Captain and knows where to place the contract or to PASS. With a maximum hand (18 to 21), you bid a new suit with a JUMP and partner is forced to bid again.<\/p>\n
