Community Living Month kicked off in Huntsville with a flag raising at Town Hall on May 9. Mayor Scott Aitchison and Councillors Nancy Alcock and Dan Armour were there to do the honours on behalf of Huntsville’s Town Council.<\/p>\n

<\/broadstreet-zone><\/strong><\/div>\n

For the month of May, the Community Living flag will fly on Town Hall as a reminder that every resident of our town deserves to be treated equally.<\/p>\n

“Inclusion is important because we are all people, we all matter,” said Mayor Scott Aitchison following the flag raising. “I think that Community Living reminds us that no matter what your upbringing is, no matter what your capacity is, no matter what your bank account says, you are part of this community and you matter, and I think that’s an important message for all of us. I think that Huntsville is a generally inclusive community and it’s an engaged community and we are all stronger when we all have a voice and we all work together. I think what Community Living represents is a big part of what we want to be as a community and what we try to do as a council.”<\/p>\n

In addition to flying the flag at Town Hall, Community Living Huntsville\u2019s building will be aglow with the organizations colours \u2013 blue and green \u2013 in keeping with the theme of the month, “Shine a Light on Community Living.\u201d<\/p>\n

Community Living Huntsville has been hosting regular inclusion tours for the past two years to spread the word about what they do.<\/p>\n

“It’s had a tremendous impact on the number of people we’ve been able to reach,” said Cathy Stroud, Executive Director of Community Living Huntsville. “We really explain in a pretty compelling way what inclusion means and the impact it can have both on people who live with the label of developmental disability but also on our community.”<\/p>\n

Our mandate is to support people with developmental disability but I think inclusion speaks to a lot lot more than that and anyone who is marginalized in our community. This can be a reminder to be inclusive.

Community Living Huntsville invites all community members to attend a Celebrating Inclusion tour to learn more about the work they do to support people with developmental disabilities. The next three Celebrating Inclusion Tours are on May 24 from 5:00-6:00 p.m., June 8 from 6:00-7:00 p.m. and June 21 from 5:30- 6:30 p.m. at Community Living Huntsville (99 West Road). Community Living Huntsville recently held a Business of Inclusion fundraising event at Hidden Valley Resort. Staff shared the organization’s message to a packed room to ask for support for their programs, in particular for those who are not eligible for government supports but who would benefit from Community Living Huntsville’s assistance. Fundraising totals from the event will be announced at a later date.<\/p>\n
