{"id":29533,"date":"2017-04-14T05:17:23","date_gmt":"2017-04-14T09:17:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/huntsville.dopperonline.ca\/?p=29533"},"modified":"2017-04-14T06:18:46","modified_gmt":"2017-04-14T10:18:46","slug":"naloxone-kits-for-opioid-overdoses-available-in-huntsville","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/doppleronline.ca\/huntsville\/naloxone-kits-for-opioid-overdoses-available-in-huntsville\/","title":{"rendered":"Naloxone kits for opioid overdoses available in Huntsville"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ontario is expanding access to naloxone, a life-saving drug that can temporarily reverse an opioid overdose, by providing it free of charge to anyone in need in over 200 cities and towns across the province.<\/p>\n<p>In Huntsville, the kits are available at:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit Needle Syringe Program, 34 Chaffey St., 705-721-7520<br \/>\n(Clients can drop-in, but are encouraged to call ahead to book an appointment to ensure that a nurse is available for training)<\/li>\n<li>Huntsville Pharmasave, 29 Main St. East, 705-789-7300<\/li>\n<li>Huntsville&#8217;s Hometown IDA Drug, 10 Main St. East, 705-789-2561<\/li>\n<li>Shoppers Drug Mart #647, 51 King William St., 705-789-4471<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div style=\"float: left; margin-right: 14px;\"><strong><broadstreet-zone zone-id=\"45658\" keywords=\"\" soft-keywords=\"true\" zone-alias=\"\"><\/broadstreet-zone><\/strong><\/div>\n<p>Dr. Eric Hoskins, Minister of Health and Long-Term Care, and Marie-France Lalonde, Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services, encourage more people who are at risk of an opioid overdose, as well as their friends and families, to pick up a free kit.<\/p>\n<p>As of the end of March 2017, more than 28,000 naloxone kits had been dispensed free of charge across Ontario at over 1,000 pharmacies, and at 40 public health units and community-based organizations that run needle exchange and hepatitis C programs. In addition, more than 500 naloxone kits have also been distributed at 10 provincial correctional facilities to at-risk inmates at the time of their release. By the end of spring 2017, all 26 provincial correctional facilities will be able to distribute naloxone kits.<\/p>\n<p>Expanding access to opioid overdose medication is part of Ontario&#8217;s <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/news.ontario.ca\/mohltc\/en\/2016\/10\/ontario-taking-action-to-prevent-opioid-abuse.html\" target=\"_blank\">Strategy to Prevent Opioid Addiction and Overdose<\/a><\/span>. As part of this strategy, Ontario has also:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Delisted high-strength opioids from the Ontario Drug Benefit formulary to help prevent addiction and support appropriate prescribing.<\/li>\n<li>Launched a comprehensive <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ontario.ca\/page\/get-naloxone-kits-free\" target=\"_blank\">website about Ontario&#8217;s naloxone kit programs<\/a><\/span>, which includes information on how to use naloxone kits, how to prevent an opioid overdose and a searchable list of where kits are available across the province.<\/li>\n<li>Placed stricter controls on the prescribing and dispensing of fentanyl patches. Patients are now required to return used fentanyl patches to their pharmacy before more patches can be dispensed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Preventing opioid overdoses is part of the government&#8217;s plan to build a better Ontario through its <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.health.gov.on.ca\/en\/ms\/ecfa\/healthy_change\/\" target=\"_blank\">Patients First: Action Plan for Health Care<\/a><\/span>, which provides patients with faster access to the right care; better home and community care; the information they need to live healthy; and a health care system that is sustainable for generations to come.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_29613\" style=\"width: 1414px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-29613\" class=\"size-full wp-image-29613\" src=\"https:\/\/media-doppleronline-ca.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/2022\/03\/Naloxone-kit-e1648229592237.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1404\" height=\"933\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-29613\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Naloxone kits are available for free for those who need them<\/p><\/div>\n<p>QUICK FACTS<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ontario\u2019s first comprehensive <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/news.ontario.ca\/mohltc\/en\/2016\/10\/ontario-taking-action-to-prevent-opioid-abuse.html\" target=\"_blank\">Opioid Strategy to Prevent Opioid Addiction and Overdose<\/a><\/span> includes initiatives to enhance data collection, modernize prescribing and dispensing practices and connect patients with high quality addiction treatment services.<\/li>\n<li>Opioids are drugs that are intended to treat pain. Some commonly used opioids include fentanyl, morphine, heroin, methadone and oxycodone.<\/li>\n<li>When someone overdoses after taking an opioid, their breathing slows or stops.
