Why do you suppose that a thousand bridge players from across North America and from the far northern reaches of Ontario will be toddling down to Toronto from July 20 to July 30? The reason is that the North American Bridge Championships (NABC) will be held there this summer for the first time since 2011. The NABC has three competitions per year, Spring, Summer and Fall at different cities throughout North America. This is Toronto\u2019s opportunity!<\/p>\n

Why do you think social bridge players would be interested in playing in National Championships games where the best players in North America and from throughout the world congregate? The answer is that there are duplicate games for all levels of bridge players. You do have to be familiar with the intricacies of duplicate bridge \u2013 the bidding boxes and the boards containing the hands that are passed from table to table. But that\u2019s why I\u2019m telling you about the tournament now. You have lots of time to learn.<\/p>\n

Duplicate bridge and social bridge are similar. The play of the hand is the same. The bidding is similar. It\u2019s only the scoring system which is very different. Because of this, the strategy of the game is different. In social bridge, it\u2019s worth taking a bit of a gamble to bid a game. The score you would win of 620 for a vulnerable game makes it worth the risk because down one would not be a bad score. In duplicate bridge, however, down one could be a very bad score if most players stopped short of the game they realized they may not make. In duplicate bridge, precision is rewarded in the scoring structure.<\/p>\n

DO NOT BE INTIMIDATED. The NABC has levels of play for all duplicate bridge players, whether you have zero masterpoints or 50,000 masterpoints! The first time we went was 2001 and we played in the 0 \u2013 5 category. This was our first year playing duplicate bridge. We did very well. Most of the people we played against had been in beginning bridge classes whereas we had been playing in Muskoka against many advanced players who were Life Masters and beyond. This experience put us in good stead. The categories include 0-5, 5-20, 20-50, 50-100, 100-200 etcetera, all competing for red masterpoints. For gold masterpoints you may play \u201cUP\u201d in the designated higher categories. Although many tournaments advertise that they have categories for less experienced players, often they do not have enough entries at the lower levels to run those sections. You then end up having to play with \u201cthe big boys and girls\u201d as the case may be. So, a NABC tournament is the best bet for newer duplicate players.<\/p>\n

Throughout the tournament, free classes in various aspects of bridge are offered. We have attended these classes many times throughout our bridge career and they have helped us keep up-to-date in our bidding and the play of the hand. The NABC tournaments and the larger Regional tournaments always have a stall that sells all the latest books about bridge. It\u2019s a good chance to peruse the different books and select ones that you think will be useful to you.<\/p>\n

You can enjoy just one game on one day or up to four games per day for eleven days. The entry fee is $20 per game, $25 for non-members of ACBL. All games are at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre from Thursday, July 20 through Sunday, July 30. For details, go to ACBL.org and click on \u201cTournaments\u201d. For those bridge players who have friends or relatives living in Toronto willing to put you up, aren\u2019t you lucky.<\/p>\n
