{"id":28958,"date":"2017-03-30T05:58:28","date_gmt":"2017-03-30T09:58:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/huntsville.dopperonline.ca\/?p=28958"},"modified":"2017-03-30T06:02:24","modified_gmt":"2017-03-30T10:02:24","slug":"discussions-around-the-possibility-of-creating-a-police-services-board-continue-mayor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/doppleronline.ca\/huntsville\/discussions-around-the-possibility-of-creating-a-police-services-board-continue-mayor\/","title":{"rendered":"Discussions around the possibility of creating a police services board continue: Mayor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mayor Scott Aitchison updated Huntsville councillors at their March 27 meeting about the idea of creating a police services board.<\/p>\n<div style=\"float: left; margin-right: 14px;\"><strong><broadstreet-zone zone-id=\"45658\" keywords=\"\" soft-keywords=\"true\" zone-alias=\"\"><\/broadstreet-zone><\/strong><\/div>\n<p>He said Bracebridge Inspector Ed Medved and Huntsville Detachment Commander John Paul Graham attended the District\u2019s Corporate Services Committee meeting and the concept was discussed in relation to a recent <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/news\/investigations\/compare-unfounded-sex-assault-rates-across-canada\/article33855643\/\" target=\"_blank\">Globe and Mail investigative report<\/a><\/span> that found that 55 per cent of sexual assault allegations brought to the attention of Huntsville police and 56 per cent of allegations brought to Bracebridge police were deemed as unfounded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd so you will recall we had some discussion about making sure the public is more engaged and\u2026 understanding why such a thing would happen and how we can improve upon that,\u201d he said, adding that it was a helpful meeting. He also noted that Bracebridge Mayor Graydon Smith said it was difficult to know how police deal with such issues on the ground.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe sort of agreed that the next step might be to actually have policing 101 training for District Council and I\u2019m sure we could set that up in such a way that all members of all councils could come so we have a better understanding of how the OPP operate, what they do, certainly have some discussion around sexual assaults and how those are dealt with and what\u2019s going on, on the ground,\u201d he said. \u201cWe hope that will inform our next steps related to hopefully having a police services board and providing opportunities for this community to be more fully engaged in how we\u2019re policed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Councillor Bob Stone asked the Mayor when the report regarding the reassessment of all those files is expected to be completed.
