Don\u2019t clutch your chest if you want your partner to lead a Heart. It is legal to signal in Bridge, but there are legal signals and illegal signals. Obviously faking a heart attack is illegal. The same goes for twirling your diamond ring, if you\u2019re a woman, when you crave a Diamond lead. I don\u2019t know what a man would do if he illegally wanted to signal partner to lead him a Diamond.<\/p>\n

<\/broadstreet-zone><\/strong><\/div>\n

In a previous column, we talked about the leads you make and how they can give your partner valuable information about how to play the hand. This week we will look at the \u201cAttitude Signal\u201d that you make with your first card played on partner\u2019s lead, and also the Signal to your partner of your first discard. These are your Primary Defensive Signals and they can help you break the enemy\u2019s contract. There are several different Primary Signals that you and your partner can adopt. I prefer the \u201cAttitude Signal.\u201d<\/p>\n

If your partner leads a Heart, and you don\u2019t like Hearts, play a small Heart, anything under a Six. If you have values in Hearts and want partner to continue that suit, play a Six or higher. Signalling can be tricky. You obviously don\u2019t want to signal with a Jack if there\u2019s a chance it may be able to take a trick. On the other hand, sometimes you don\u2019t have a card that would show accurately whether or not you like the suit. For example, the only Hearts you have in your hand are the Nine, Eight, Seven. Partner may have to study his own hand and the Dummy hand to realize that your Seven is signalling that you can\u2019t stand Hearts. If he can see the Hearts in his hand and in the Dummy hand, he may be able to judge that this is the lowest card you have and is a Negative Signal. Conversely, if you like Hearts but only have the King, Two, Three and Four, it might be hard to convince him to lead the suit back to you. Believe it or not, signalling to show your Attitude to his lead works most of the times.<\/p>\n

Another useful signal is when you play a high card followed by a low card. This tells partner, and of course partner is paying close attention to the cards that you play, that you have a Doubleton. If partner leads back this suit in a suit contract, you may be able to get a ruff for an extra trick. Here again, don\u2019t waste a high card, such as the Queen, on your signal, but a Seven followed by a Five would get the point across.<\/p>\n

You also give a Primary Signal with your first discard. As the play of the hand proceeds, you may run out of cards in the played suit. For example, on the third round of Spades, you are out of Spades. Don\u2019t just play any old card without thought. Perhaps, you would dearly love your partner to lead a Club because you have the Ace and Queen, and on your right in the dummy hand is the King. This is how it works. There are four suits in Bridge. When discarding, you are out of one suit (the Spades in this case.) You are using a suit that you don\u2019t like as discards (Diamonds). There are two suits left, Clubs (the lower suit) and Hearts (the higher suit). Discard a low Diamond if you want the Clubs. If you want Hearts, discard a high Diamond. Here again, you may not always have the best cards to make your signal, but your astute partner will usually be able to figure out the meaning.<\/p>\n

This method of signalling on your first discard is called Lavinthal and can be used in both Suit and No Trump contracts. Some players play different systems. It is important that whatever system you use, you must both be playing the same system!<\/p>\n
