Volunteers are the lifeblood of many local charities \u2013 without those dedicated, passionate people, they couldn\u2019t do the good work that they do. Many come with a diverse skillset; all come with good intentions. But there can still be a gap between what an organization needs to successfully deliver its programs and services and what their volunteers have to offer. That\u2019s where Volunteer Muskoka can help.<\/p>\n

Providing region-wide workshops on everything from volunteer-specific skills to funding and grant writing to legal concerns for non-profits, Volunteer Muskoka helps organizations that rely on volunteers to close that gap.<\/p>\n

Now, they\u2019re also reaching out and partnering with local charities to fill specific needs.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe still have a variety of workshops that give volunteers great new skills, and now we\u2019re working with different organizations to bring them workshops specific to their needs as an organization,\u201d says Volunteer Muskoka co-ordinator Rose Evans.<\/p>\n

One example is an upcoming workshop on May 15 \u2013 Legal Support for Consent and Capacity Discussions \u2013 with Judith Wahl, Past Executive Director of the Advocacy Centre for the Elderly. It\u2019s being hosted by Hospice Muskoka and will provide volunteers and healthcare professionals who work with the elderly with valuable information. And it\u2019s open to anyone else who might find it useful, including people with elderly parents. Would you know how to assist someone to make decisions around personal care when they are no longer capable?<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cOur workshops are open to everyone,\u201d explains Evans. \u201cYou don\u2019t have to be a volunteer or member of an organization to participate.\u201d<\/p>\n

The upcoming SmartServe certification course on January 31, for example, is necessary to volunteers who work at events where alcohol is served, but anyone in the community who might use it in their workplace is welcome to register.<\/p>\n

Our goal is to both empower volunteers and ensure that local organizations can be successful in fulfilling their mandates. They know what skills they need best, and we\u2019re here to help.
