Previously we looked at the \u201cMichaels Cue Bid\u201d and other basic conventions recommended by the bridge professional, Jerry Helms. Like Michaels, the \u201cUnusual Two No Trump Cue Bid\u201d offers two bids for the price of one. Your New Year\u2019s Resolution may be to improve your bridge game. Learning with your partner the \u201cUnusual Two No Trump Cue Bid\u201d is one way to do this.<\/p>\n

<\/broadstreet-zone><\/strong><\/div>\n

Why is the \u201cUnusual Two No Trump\u201d bid unusual? It\u2019s an artificial cue bid jump that (despite its name) has nothing to do with No Trump. It simply is a bid that tells your partner that you are five \u2013 five in the two lowest unbid suits. For example: your opponent has opened the bidding One Heart. If you make a jump bid to Two No Trump, you are telling your partner that you are five \u2013 five in Clubs and Diamonds. If your opponent opens One Diamond, your bid of Two No Trump shows Clubs and Hearts. If your opponent opens the bidding One Club, your Two No Trump bid shows Diamonds and Hearts. Unfortunately it does not work with Spades, you just must do an overcall.<\/p>\n

The strength of the hand can vary according to partnership agreement. Many players use this bid on hands that are either below opening points or else are very strong hands. On hands that have just around an opening bid count (12-15), you would bid normally by overcalling with one of the five-card suits. Sometimes, the Two No Trump bidder is a passed hand and may be making a sacrifice.<\/p>\n

According to partnership agreement, some partnerships will use this bid with a hand in which the two suits are five – four, if the four card suit is particularly strong (eg AKxx). Also, if your opponent opens One No Trump and you bid Two No Trump, you are showing both minors.<\/p>\n

In all these situations, your partner MUST NOT PASS, unless of course, the opponents have made an intervening bid and partner\u2019s hand is weak. Otherwise partner picks his best suit at the three level from the two choices you have given him. The Unusual Two No Trump is a powerful defensive bid because it might take away two levels of bidding from the opener. You just might hit on a good offensive contract for yourself at the three level.<\/p>\n
